CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- Friday is the last day to file claims against Freedom Industries for the chemical leak that affected 300,000 West Virginians.
Claims can be filed by businesses or individuals in person by 5 p.m. Friday at the Robert C. Byrd U.S. Courthouse in Charleston.
Local Claims and Noticing Agent, James Lane, says they expect to receive about 2,000 claims by the deadline Friday. The amount is expected to exceed $20 million dollars.
Restaurants were hit hard during the chemical crisis, some losing businesses after having to close for nearly a week. Little India on Charleston's East End filed Friday for claims, just before the deadline.
"(There's a) right to have clean water and to stay in business and serve the community, and that right was taken away by the chemical mixing in the water," said Meena Anada, general manager of Little India.
Businesses and individuals have until 11:59 p.m. Friday to file online. You can do so by clicking on the link below.
