INSTITUTE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Students, faculty and staff said their final farewell to an education icon in the Kanawha Valley, Saturday.
Former West Virginia State University President Hazo Carter was laid to rest, Saturday. Carter died Tuesday.
He served as president from 1987 until 2012, and was the state's longest serving college president when he retired.
During Carter's tenure, West Virginia state was granted university status and regained its designation as a land-grant institution.
Carter was 67 years old.
