CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A juvenile was arrested late Thursday night after a brutal robbery near Magic Island.
Police say it happened just before midnight Thursday along Tennessee Avenue on Charleston's West Side.
They say two juveniles approached the victim, a man in his 40s, earlier in the night. They say the three exchanged words and went their separate ways.
Police then say later on in the evening, the victim was approached again by one of the juveniles.
Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper says, "The suspect just ran up on him and started beating him in the face. It caused his face to be bloodied up, and he stole and took off with the backpack."
The suspect was tracked down a short time later, just across the street at Magic Island.
It's a place frequented by families like Peter Ambler's.
"A lot of crime takes place for different reasons, but I know our neighbors and I think we live in a safe neighborhood," Ambler said.
Police add that the park is still a safe place for families, and this crime isn't a regular occurrence.
The juvenile is charged with first-degree robbery. Police say the suspect's name and age will not be released because he is a juvenile. They did say he is from Charleston.
The victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
