KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The Kanawha County Commission has decided to cancel the County Fair for the summer and for summers to come.
The lack of funding and alleged misuse of what little there was -- caused commissioners to make the decision Thursday night.
In 2006 the commission created a foundation to raise money for the fair.
However, Commissioner Dave Hardy says the foundation stopped having meetings in 2010 and wasn't paying the proper IRS fees.
He also says one of the people soliciting funds was keeping 30 percent of it as commission.
"There were no controls. There was nobody watching what was going on,” Hardy said. “It was a very corrupt situation, it was very unacceptable and frankly an embarrassment to the county and the county commission."
Hardy says the only way they will bring the county fair back is if someone steps in and offers to fund the entire event.
