KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- School board members approved the 2014-2015 calendar Wednesday night.
Aug. 11 is the day that students and staff will head back to the schools. The last day of school will be May 27.
School board member Becky Jordan, who is also a parent, insists starting in early August allows school to finish finals before Christmas and prevents any lags in learning.
It also provides three weeks off of school throughout the year for Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break.
The early start date has some parents concerned.
"I think that what most people feel is that this is a precursor to going to that year-round calendar," parent Jennifer Piercy-Igo explained.
Jordan assured that was not the case.
"Never have we even thought about it," Jordan said. "We have not even discussed a balanced calendar."
