UPDATE 10/17/12 @ 12:55 p.m.
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man from Kanawha County will spend at least the next decade behind bars after sexually abusing his friend's daughter.
Wednesday, Justin Hamrick was sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison.
Hamrick sexually assaulted his friend’s nine-year-old girl. He was out of jail on probation when the assault happened.
Prosecutors say the victim's mother allowed Hamrick to stay in her home while he got his life back in order.
Hamrick says the assault was fueled by a drug addiction. He apologized in court, while prosecutors say justice was served.
"I am sorry for my poor actions, I have done,” said Hamrick.
“He completely abused the trust of the mother, instead of helping her he sexually assaulted her daughter," said Prosecutor Fred Giggenbach.
Hamrick is already serving one to five years in prison on unrelated burglary charges.
Justin Hamrick was arrested Friday after he admitted to sexually assaulting the girl in her own bed.
"Our victim, who was 9 years old at the time, reported to us, as recently as two weeks ago that she was sexually touched by a live-in person who was a family friend at the time," Lt. Sean Crosier with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department said.
Pine Valley Trailer Park is where the incident supposedly happened nearly a year ago.
"We didn't know exactly why the deputies picked him up. We saw them up there right at the entrance," Park Manager Jim Conner said.
Neighbors say Hamrick has lived at the trailer park for a couple of years, moving from one trailer to the next.
Hamrick admitted, during one of those stays, he went into a little girl's bedroom, put a blanket over her head, removed her pants and performed sexual acts on her. When the girl started to wake up, Hamrick left the room.
"I never dreamed the poor boy would do it. It really is sick, but I never dreamed of him doing something like that," Neighbor Matthew Rhodes said.
It's an incident that's left community members with a lot of questions and a lack of trust.
"He never concerned me because he was never any trouble," Conner said.
"After hearing this, I don't even know if it's safe for a kid to come out anymore," Rhodes said.
Officials with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department say it didn't take Hamrick long to confess. Hamrick was given several lie detector tests, and then admitted to the crime in less than a minute.
Hamrick is scheduled to be back in court on April 16.
Justin Hamrick was arrested and arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court Friday.
Hamrick is charged with sexual assault.
On Thursday, a detective with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office met with the ten-year-old victim at the Child's Advocacy Center at Woman and Children's Hospital. The child told the detective that when she was nine Hamrick has come into her room and performed sexual acts on her.
Friday the detective met with Hamrick and he admitted to the sexual acts.
Hamrick is 23 years old.
Hamrick's bond was set at $10,000.
His preliminary hearing is set for April 16 at 1:30 p.m.
