CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One community often pegged as "violent" is showing there's more to it than crime.

Charleston's West Side had a community 'Keep the Peace' block party, Saturday.

The fire department was on hand doing home safety demonstrations, and a church group was there giving away free clothes.

There were also lots of activities for all ages and free food.

Organizers say it's all to show that they live in a peaceful, loving neighborhood.

"It says that we are a community and that as one we can stand together and push out all of this other nonsense, because it is nonsense and this community ain't about that," event coordinator Dural Miller said. "I was born and raised over here. I've been here my whole life. I love it over here."

Saturday's event is one of several over the past couple of months where neighbors on the west side are working to improve the area's image and its safety.
