Kroger Closing Location in Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A grocery store in Kanawha County is closing.

A spokesperson for Kroger's Mid-Atlantic region, Carl York, tells WSAZ.com the Kroger store on E. Dupont Avenue in Diamond is closing its doors on April 11. The store employees 20 full time and 36 part time associates.

York says there is an opportunity for these employees to transfer to other Kroger locations.

"It is a difficult decision to close a store. The closing is strictly a financial decision," York said. "The Diamond store has been unprofitable for several years and is older and smaller than most of our stores."

The store has 31,000 square feet.

Walmart opened a new store in 2011 near this Kroger store. Company officials wouldn't confirm if that played a factor in the success of the store.

Meanwhile, Kroger is in the process of updating several stores in the Kanawha Valley, including the Kroger at Ashton Place and Teays Valley.

Kroger is also expanding the Ashton Place location by adding new food departments and a Wi-Fi lounge. This project will create 50 jobs, according to York.

The company is also making plans to renovate the Kanawha City store in the near future.

These renovation projects total nearly $22M.
