Long-Serving Charleston City Council Woman Passes Away

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A long-serving city council woman for the city of Charleston has passed away.

After many years of serving West Virginia's Capitol City, Mary Jane Vanderwilt passed away this weekend.

Along with her years on city council, Vanderwilt also served with the Beautification Committee.

County commissioner, Hoppy Shores has ordered all flags at Kanawha County facilities to be lowered to half-staff our of respect for Vanderwilt's "many significant contributions to city, county and state government"

"We are all deeply saddened by the passing of one of the finest representatives of city government the City of Charleston has ever known," Shores said. "Mary Jane leaves a legacy that will never be forgotten. "
