Longtime Pastor in Kanawha Valley Announces Retirement

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The senior pastor of Maranatha Fellowship in St. Albans is retiring from his post.

Dr. James R. Wright, Jr. announced his plans to his congregation on Sunday.

Pastor Wright held the church's first meeting on October 13, 1976 in a living room of a house. According to a church spokesperson, 100 people attended that first meeting and now the church averages more than 2,000 people on Sundays.

Dr. Wright told his staff and congregation he doesn't plan to stop his ministry work. He plans to continue another ministry, helping smaller churches in the area.

Darren Powell was named the new Senior Pastor of Maranatha Fellowship. He was serving as the campus pastor at the St. Albans campus.

Maranatha Fellowship has another location in Ripley, West Virginia.
