KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Deputies have recovered stolen property from a motel room in Kanawha County.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department responded to the Budget Inn along Kanawha Boulevard where they say Thomas Alvin Hager, 41, was staying with his wife.

Early Wednesday morning, Hager was caught robbing the house next door to the motel.

Deputies say he assaulted the 71-year-old woman who lives there, ran from police and then kicked the deputy who caught him in the face.

"Any time someone invades your castle or your space inside your home that we believe is going to be safe, that's terrifying for anyone," Capt. Sean Crosier said.

Inside Hager's motel room, deputies have discovered stolen items that appear to be not only from the house next door, but also from other thefts in the area.

Hager is in the South Central Regional Jail charged with night-time burglary and assault. His wife has been questioned by police and also could face charges.
