The suspect of Saturday evening’s West Side shooting remains on the loose as police say witness statements haven’t been able to identify the gunman.

Authorities tell WSAZ the suspect shot Terell Ross at least twice near the corner of Florida Street and Second Avenue.

At least three witnesses have provided descriptions but neighbors hope more come forward so the suspect is caught.

Neighbor Ronald Smith Jr. said the crime is concerning because the shooting happened just feet where he’s raising his family.

“It does concern me that it happened right in my backyard, where my children play,” Smith said.

Smith said he was home during the shooting but was listening to music and didn’t hear the gunshots.

He said if he had, he would gladly assist in identifying the suspect but admits there’s an unwritten code that if you witness a crime, you don’t tell police.

“Some may fear retaliation; some may fear that they don't want to put the community in more danger,” Smith said.

Community leader Rev. James Ealy of the New Covenant Missionary Baptist church said he's all too familiar with the "unwritten code" but said that code is hurting the community.

“If I'm in danger, it's still the neighborhood and if it's the neighborhood then I'm still in danger so either way it's a lose- lose situation by me not talking ,” Ealy said.

Police tell WSAZ they expect to get surveillance of the shooting Monday from a gas station near the shooting.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A shooter is on the loose after police say he shot another man several times Saturday on Charleston's west side.

Officers tell WSAZ.com, the victim, Terrell Ross, was near the corner of Florida Street and Second Avenue when he was shot at least twice.

They say the shooting happened in an alleyway behind a gas station in the area.

Keith Thompkins was shopping inside that gas station when he heard the shots ring out.

"We looked out the door and we could see a guy running down the street," Keith Thompkins said. "He said 'I'm getting out of here,' and next thing we knew the police came up."

Police say Ross ran to get help at the home of a friend in the neighborhood who talked with WSAZ.com.

"He was getting worse by the minute and I guess his leg was getting numb," he said.

Neighbors say they're fed up with violence in the community.

"This is real life," Thompkins said. "But it's too much...it needs to stop."

Police say they're looking for a male suspect who was dressed all in black and wearing a red bandanna.

Officers say they're getting conflicting reports about the number of shots fired. Some witnesses say they heard less than 10 while others claim there were more than 20.

Police say if the upper range is true, they may be searching for more suspects.
