UPDATE 2/20/14 @ 5 p.m.
DUNBAR, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office has released the name of a man they say shot himself during a fight with police when they executed a petition at his home.

The Sheriff's Office says Dunbar Police served a domestic violence petition on Rich Dean Wilcox, 65, at his home in the 1400 block of West Virginia Avenue in Dunbar Wednesday evening.

Officers say the petition had been issued earlier in the day and required him to leave the home.

Investigators say Wilcox met officers at the door, then locked the door and went back inside.

Investigators say family members met officers outside and gave them a key to the house. They told police Wilcox may have had a gun.

"A struggle began somewhere along the stairs or upstairs some place," Kanawha County Corporal B.D. Humphries said. "During the struggle, Mr. Wilcox produced a handgun that he had on him which went off while he was in the fight with officers."

Investigators shot himself with his own weapon during the fight.

Officers say they heard the gunshot and called 911, requesting additional assistance. Dunbar Police, South Charleston Police and the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. Ambulances were also dispatched.

Wilcox was transported to Thomas Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Dunbar Police Chief asked the Kanawha Bureau of Investigation to investigate the incident. The Sheriff's Office says detectives searched the scene and interviewed witnesses overnight and that investigation is still active.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Family members tell WSAZ.com that Wilcox had a history of problems like anger issues, and may not have been taking his medication recently.
