KANAWHA COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- For Charlie Warner, keeping your kids safe isn't just a concern; It's his job.

"We have practical steps to prevent and prepare for school violence," he said.

Warner was hired this month in Kanawha County as the school district's new security and risk management specialist.

His position is part of a countywide effort to crack down on classroom safety. It's something he says is more important now than ever.

"It's sad that we live in a culture where we have to concern ourselves with people who want to victimize the innocent," he said. "And it's only prudent."

Warner says the school district's safety policies aren't new, but they aren't always carried out as well as they could be.

Now it's his duty to make sure all schools stay on track.

"I believe we should always inspect what we expect," he said. "The safety committee is going to inspect to make sure these things are being done. And I'll also go to the schools and randomly check."

Warner says schools are expected to keep all doors locked, both inside and outside of the building.

He says they should have single point of entry with video surveillance and a call button, along with a panic button that automatically triggers lockdown mode.

"We have technology put in place to protect the students," he said.

Warner says some of that technology involves scanning your driver's license before you enter a school.

He says the system will check your identity against a database that searches for felony records, registered sex offenders, and a history of violent behavior.

Warner says he'll be working closely with county police departments to increase their presence in schools.
