People Frustrated Waiting at Water Distribution Centers

CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- Cars lined up under an I-64 bridge in Charleston. Many people hoped they'd get another day's worth of bottled water at a water distribution center.

"It's really been chaos, but we've been giving out water since about 9 o'clock this morning," said Distribution Center Worker, Larry Moore.

Jennifer Hines showed up as crews brought more palettes of water.

"I just ran out last night," said Jennifer Hines.

It was a relief, as supplies dwindled before her eyes.

"I need some fresh water to clean with, to take a bath in," said Hines.

Workers at one of the water distribution centers said they went through about 18 palettes of water in the first two hours.

They estimate about 1,000 people came through in that time.

"People just don't feel safe drinking the tap water, I don't blame them, if you've got family at home, pregnant mothers, you want to be safe, just be on the safe side, better to be safe than sorry," said Moore.

People in line shared their growing frustration.

Some still don't believe the water is safe and others said they want more help.

"Everybody depends on water, you cannot live without water, you can't cook without water, you can't do anything without water," said Barbara Drake.

"Direct traffic so that people aren't cutting in line, can't get through," said Kitty Cooper.

Although the water has been deemed safe to drink by some, these people said they just aren't ready to use it.

"We thought we'd be able to drink tap water, but no, this has gone farther than I thought," said Cooper.

They said they'll wait in line for as long as it takes.
