UPDATE 8/24/13 @ 11:00 p.m. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -
A secret police operation became very public Friday when a suspect opened fire at an officer.

It happened at about 10 Friday night. Charleston Police tell WSAZ.com, undercover officers from the Special Enforcement Unit were conducting surveillance at the Greyhound bus terminal on Washington Street when they noticed suspicious behavior from Cleveland-native James Herod.

Police say Herod admitted to having drugs but tried to run away after being confronted.

“He handed over the drugs to Officer Howell and then ran out the door, and when he did that our undercover officers chased him across the street and as they were Mr. Herod then fired one round,” Chief of Detectives Steve Cooper said.

Neighbors who live in the apartment complex directly across from the bus station say Friday’s incident is disturbing but not surprising.

“If they’re going to shoot at police officers, what’s to stop them from shooting at me,” said neighbor TJ LeFeber, adding, “It's a problem area mostly because of the bus station , because you have a lot of people that hang out there, a lot of people that hang out at the bus stop.”

Herod was charged with wanton endangerment and being a prohibited person carrying a firearm.

Officers tell WSAZ.com Herod is a convicted felon on previous drug charges.

As of Saturday night, Herod was being held at the South Central Regional Jail.

Police say no one was hit by the shot Herod fired.
