UPDATE 1/29/14 @ 3:45 p.m.
St. Albans, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- We now know the name of the elderly woman who died in a house fire in St. Albans.

The W.Va. State Fire Marshal's Office tells WSAZ.com that Shelby Rach, 73, wasn't able to get out of her home on Fairview Drive.

The fire happened about 7:30 Tuesday night.

Investigators believe a space heater started the fire.

Rach’s son tried to save her, but was unable.

Neighbor Misty Showalter talked to the son shortly after he got out of the house.

"He just kept telling me 'I had her, I had her,'" Showalter said. "I'm assuming smoke overcame him, and he lost her."

UPDATE 1/28/14 @ 11:10 p.m.
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A son desperately tried to save his 74-year-old mother from a house fire Tuesday night near St. Albans, but she didn't make it.

It happened about 7:20 p.m. in the 100 block of Fairview Drive.

Neighbor Misty Showalter says she talked with the son shortly after he got out of the house.

"He just kept telling me 'I had her, I had her,'" Showalter said. "I'm assuming smoke overcame him, and he lost her."

"I can't imagine what it would be like to be trying to rescue your mom and not be able to do it and have to leave her behind," Chief David Duncan with the West Side Volunteer Fire Department said. "I'm sure prayers for the family would be greatly appreciated at this time."

Neighbors say the son was working on insulating the home earlier Tuesday evening, but it's unclear if that had anything to do with what was responsible for the fire.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating.
