CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The father of an innocent bystander caught in the line of fire Saturday during a shooting on the West Side is speaking out.

Police say Jodicy Bateman, 21, was sitting in her car on 2nd Avenue when shots rang out and a bullet lodged in her shoulder.

"What would go through any father's mind knowing that their child just got shot?" her father said.

The father didn't want to give his name to WSAZ.com but says Jodicy is recovering well both physically and emotionally.

"My baby didn't shed a tear," he said. "They couldn't break her spirits. That's a lesson for people. No matter what you do to somebody, if they have joy in their heart, you can't break that."

Police say the gunfire erupted during an argument between Jamar Adams, 25, and Donovan Hardison.

They say Adams pulled out a gun and fired several times at Hardison, who escaped without being hit.

Both men have criminal records, according to detectives. Adams is still on the run and is wanted by police.

Jodicy's father says he still feels safe in the neighborhood despite the shooting.

"After something like this happens, people are going to be nervous," he said. "But they probably don't have to be. This is a quiet neighborhood."
Family members tell WSAZ.com that Jodicy has been released from the hospital and is doing well.

Police say her mother and four-month-old baby were also inside that car. Neither of them were hurt.
