CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are warning consumers about a possible scheme targeting a popular Christmas outreach program.
Neighbors in Fayette and Raleigh counties have been getting phone calls from a group saying they are raising money for the "Shop with a Cop" program.
The Fayette County Memorial Lodge #118 is running the program in that area. They say consumers shouldn't fall for it because they do not solicit money for the program over the phone.
If you receive a similar call, you're asked to call your local police department.
Several other groups do solicit money for the program over the phone, like the Brothers in Blue. Organizers of that group of law enforcement and firefighters across West Virginia say these types of schemes hurt legitimate groups who want to help kids in need.
