KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Families losing food from the recent storms are eligible to receive replacement food stamps.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources has made some adjustments to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).

Applications for replacement stamps will now be accepted through July 30.

In Kanawha County, 15,288 households are part of the program.

Keeping food in your freezer has become a huge challenge for many losing power time and time again.

Hundreds of hungry families lined up outside the Charleston DHHR office on Monday seeking out some fresh food.

Ameya Olsen and her family are one of many taking a number and waiting with others who have been roughing it.

"It's such a relief because like I said, we've lost everything," Olsen said. "There's nothing left."

Olsen added, "If you can't feed your kids, that's the worst thing in the world."

In order to qualify for replacement stamps, you have to know the value of what you lost. Officials say you are not required to have receipts or proof of purchase -- just honesty.

"We think the people who use food stamps use them wisely," DHHR spokesperson John Law said. "When they tell us how much they have lost, that's the amount we replace for them up to their monthly maximum."

Some 143,000 West Virginia households are part of the federal program. Anyone not on SNAP is not eligible for replacements.

Those who do qualify have to fill out two forms, and it must be done by July 30. They can also be filled out online at WVDHHR.org and clock on the SNAP Replacement Form under Current Topics.
