QUINCY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The baseball field at Riverside High school is now officially the Eric J. Smith Memorial Field.

Thursday evening, the Kanawha Board of Education members welcomed Eric Smith's family at their meeting as they made the dedication official.

Smith died in a car accident in 1975. His favorite pastime was playing baseball.

He played for DuPont High School, which consolidated with East Bank to become Riverside, when he was a student there.

The field at Riverside High School needs some work and the Smith family thought this would be a great way to help out and honor Eric.

'Its just very emotional for me. its been over thirty years and its still really hard. its just emotional for all of us," explained Eric's brother, Keith Smith.

The field is being completely remodeled.

School officials tell us those renovations could take up to five years before the field is ready to host its first game.

Right now the Riverside Warriors are playing their home games at DuPont Middle School.
