Salt Supplies Dwindling in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- All of the recent snow has kept road crews busy and dwindled salt supplies.

The city of Charleston is no exception.

Saturday morning was a messy trip for Carla Robbins.

"We just came down to Charleston a few minutes, had some errands to run, and then we're headed back home," said Robbins.

Robbins drove from Parkersburg. On her way to the capital city, she passed a few wrecks and had to battle plenty of slick spots.

"Slow down a lot and watch out for the semis they seem to be going very fast," said Robbins.

In the mix of traffic, salt trucks could be seen clearing and salting the roads.

But the salt supply for Charleston's 18 trucks is dwindling. That's a trend many cities are noticing.

"Normally we like to have between 5,000 and 6,000 tons on hand, now we're sitting at about probably 2,000 tons," said Charleston Public Works Director, Gary Taylor.

City officials said they've ordered more, but demand is up and deliveries are taking a while.

"A snow event like we just went through we use anywhere from 700, 800 to 900 tons of salt in one event," said Taylor.

Road crews aren't worried yet.

They said some flat areas may not get salted as well, but it shouldn't have an impact on your commute.

"Doesn't matter if it's an inch of snow, it doesn't matter if it's two feet of snow, we're still going to do the same thing, we're going to get the roads clean as possible," said Taylor.

But Robbins said just in case, she'll take it a little slower.

Charleston city crews said they avoid using cinders or chipstone on the roads because it could damage the city's storm sewers.

They said the last time they ran out of salt was in 2009.
