UPDATE 10/19/12 @ 11 a.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Repairs are underway after a portion of the Quarrier Street Parking Garage at the Charleston Town Center Mall collapsed.

General Manager Tom Bird tells WSAZ.com that crews have already removed a 30-foot slab of concrete that fell Thursday morning.

Bird says the section of concrete was being replaced which reduces the amount of weight it can carry. A piece of construction equipment was parked by mistake on the section and it fell through the floor.

No one was hurt and no cars were damaged.

Inspectors say the collapse did not damage any other part of the garage.

UPDATE 10/18/12 @ 5:25 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Major clean up continues at the Charleston Town Center Mall after a collapse in the parking garage.

A small portion of the sixth floor Quarrier Street parking garage collapsed about 10 a.m. Thursday.

A 30-foot slab of concrete fell onto the fifth floor.

Mall managers say crews were replacing concrete on the sixth floor.

That project reduced the amount of weight the floor could handle.

An eight thousand pound piece of construction equipment was parked on the weakened section and that caused it to collapse.

No one was hurt and no cars were damaged.

Mall managers say this was all caused by a simple mistake.

Engineers are at the mall right now to see if the collapse caused any other damage to the parking garage.

Cars are still being allowed to park on the lower levels of the building.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Firefighters are on the scene of a small collapse at the Quarrier Street parking garage at the Charleston Town Center Mall.

The collapse happened sometime Thursday morning.

A small part of the sixth floor fell onto the level below. No cars were damaged and no one was hurt.

It appears construction work was going on at the time of the collapse.

Caution tape is up on the sidewalk near where the incident took place, along with a dumpster where it appears work was being done on the garage.

A spokesperson with the Charleston Town Center Mall tells WSAZ.com she is waiting to get an engineer's report of the damage.

Right now, the garage is still operating as normal and vehicles are entering and exiting the garage.

The mall is expected to release more information later this afternoon.

We have a crew at the scene. Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for the latest information.
