Snow-Covered School Roads Cause Concern Among Parents

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Parents in Cedar Grove are concerned about snow and ice on the only road leading to and from the elementary school.

Snow covered and slippery roads created problems for drivers all over Kanawha County on Monday morning. For Cara Lanham, it's an issue involving the safety of her kids.

"A bus in front of me was going over the tracks which is on an embankment and it was going sideways," Lanham said.

She says the one road going in and out of Cedar Grove Elementary is a constant problem in the winter.

"If there was an issue where they needed emergency help for, there's no way in, if there's someone stuck on the streets that aren't being cleared," Lanham said.

The roads are treated by the town. They say they do their best to clear them but when heavy snow falls, slippery roads are a problem everywhere.

"It's always a challenge when we're trying to treat and there's traffic," said Carrie Bly with the West Virginia Department of Transportation. If you're stuck in traffic from an accident, there's a chance a salt truck may be stuck with you. "When there is an accident, it's kind of a chain reaction, so traffic slows, the snow's continuing to fall. We had two trucks that were actually stuck in that so they're moving at the same pace as the other traffic."
