CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man is following his father's footsteps and hoping to begin a life of public service.

Josh Martin announced Thursday he is running for West Virginia State Senate next year.

Martin's dad, Dale, served in the House of Delegates for more than a decade. He died unexpectedly back in May.

Josh is running for a senate seat in a newly created district that covers northern Kanawha and Putnam counties.

"I really do feel we all have a responsibility to make sure tomorrow is a better day for our children" Martin said. "I think my father did that quite ablely and my mother is doing that now by filling in for the rest of his term. I think I can do some good for the people of Kanawha and Putnam counties."

Martin is currently a lawyer and has worked in the West Virginia Attorney General's Office.

If he wins, Martin will share the district with Senator Erik Wells.
