Suspicious Item Closes Busy Road in Cross Lanes

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A busy road was shut down Friday afternoon after a suspicious item was reported near the Department of Health and Human Resources building in Cross Lanes.

West Washington Street was closed just before noon Friday.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies tell WSAZ.com someone found a pipe with caps on each end on top of a buried gas line in front of the DHHR building. The bomb squad was called in to investigate as a precaution.

Deputies say when they took off one of the caps attached to the pipe nothing was found inside.

During the investigation, employees were kept inside the DHHR building away from the glass until the all clear was given, according to deputies.

West Washington Street was closed in the area for nearly an hour while crews were on scene.

WSAZ.com reached out to the DHHR for comment about the incident.

Allison Adler with the DHHR responded with this comment "We followed the procedures set out by law enforcement during this issue."
