Taking the Polar Plunge

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Some high-spirited folks in Charleston put on their swimsuits, as well as a few silly costumes, for the annual Polar Plunge.

The plungers jumped into a frigid cold swimming pool at Power Park.

All the proceeds go toward the Special Olympics.

Smurfs, Uncle Sam, and Santa Claus were just a few of the costumes plungers donned.

Richard Knapp dressed as Cupid for the event. His plunge earned a groan from the crowd of on-lookers as he belly-flopped into the icy water.

"It just depends,” Knapp said of the typically painful maneuver while rubbing his belly. “If you have enough padding right here, then you can easily hit the water with no effort."
