Teachers Prepare to Make up for Lost Time

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Classes were supposed to get started back up in Kanawha County Tuesday, following the recent water crisis.

However, the snow day made the tenth day school has been canceled since Christmas.

In fact, students have only been in class two full days since the holiday break.

“Every day off I have been here doing something,” Melissa Agee, an English teacher at St. Albans High School, said about her classroom.

Agee has taken advantage of the 10 days canceled due to weather or water problems.

She's more organized than ever, because she knows once students fill the desks again -- there's a lot of catching up to do.

“Everything that I started since Christmas I will restart when we finally come back -- hopefully tomorrow,” Agee said.

“School's closed!” Olivia Whittington, a second-grade student, said as she played in the snow on Tuesday.

Whittington would rather hit the slopes than hit the books. However, Agee's daughter, Grace Henley, who’s in the eighth grade, feels differently.

“I've been getting a little bit of cabin fever,” Henley said. “I've watched a lot of movies that I’ve rewatched over and over. Then I’ve also read a whole lot of books.”

Speaking of reading…

“I'm concerned. I have five acts of Shakespeare to cover before the end of the grading period,” Agee said.

And don't forget those annual exams: like the WEST Test. Those dates are set in stone.

“We will have to curtail our lessons and make sure we focus on the very most important things, and maybe fewer videos, fewer other activities and just focus on the core essential things,” Agee said.

The last day of school in Kanawha County was supposed to be May 15, but because of all the days off, they will now go until May 23.

Students will also have to attend some faculty senate days that were previously supposed to be days off.
