UPDATE @ 9 a.m.
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The majority of power has been restored to customers in the Elkview area of Kanawha County.

As of 9 a.m., only nine customers were still without power in that area. There were nearly 2,300 without power as of early Wednesday morning, but most power was restored about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Bridge Elementary was without power Wednesday morning and Elkview Middle School only had partial power at the beginning of the school day. Power was restored to both schools about 8:30 a.m.

A spokesperson with AEP tells WSAZ.com power was knocked out about 2 a.m. when a tree fell on some power lines.

AEP estimates power will be restored by 10:30 a.m.

As of 8 a.m., nearly 2,300 customers were without power. The outages are causing some problems at two Kanawha County schools.

AEP crews have been out all morning trying to restore power.

Terry Hollandsworth, maintenance director for Kanawha County schools, tells WSAZ.com the county has checked with custodians from both schools to make sure the buildings were not cold and the buildings were comfortable for students and teachers.

AEP estimates that power will be restored any minute.

Once the power is restored, Hollandsworth says the heating and cooling systems at both schools will be checked out to make sure they're working properly.

The power outage is also causing some traffic issues because traffic lights are out at intersections in the Elkview area. Drivers are urged to use caution.

No word on what caused the outage.
