CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's House of Delegates is preparing to act on the recent sweeping audit of the state's public schools system.

Speaker Rick Thompson on Thursday announced a nine-delegate working group that will focus on the review's findings and recommendations ahead of the 2013 regular session.

The Wayne County Democrat says public education in West Virginia stands at the brink of an overhaul in the wake of the audit. That review describes a system heavy with bureaucrats and constrained by state laws. Despite devoting billions toward its public schools annually, student achievement continues to lag.

The working group features Democratic Delegates David Perry, Larry Williams, Randy Swartzmiller, Doug Reynolds and Denise Campbell.

Delegates Bill Anderson, Daryl Cowles, Amanda Pasdon and Eric Nelson are its Republican members.

The session begins Feb. 13.
