UPDATE 9/17/13 @ 4:30 p.m.
NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A water line ruptured in a senior assisted living facility -- causing some major damage.
Now, more than a dozen people living at Village on Park in Nitro have to find another place to stay.
Village on Park is an assisted living facility for seniors like Linda Belcher, who was startled Tuesday morning by the banging on her door.
“He said, 'Come on, come on. We've got to get out.' I said why? Then I saw the water running in the doorway. He said, 'The whole building is being flooded,' ” Belcher said.
By that point, there was nearly a foot of water on the second floor in an area that was being renovated.
“Some workmen were doing some construction and apparently got into a water line,” Nitro Fire Chief Jeff Elkins said.
The pipe ruptured, and with nowhere for the water to go, it started seeping through the ceiling of the first floor.
“We have ceiling tiles coming down, carpets wet, all the flooring is wet on the first and second floor,” Elkins said.
Elkins estimates about 20 of the 60 apartments are damaged.
The main concern, though, was getting the people, their medications and even their pets out safely.
One woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries from a fall during the evacuation.
More than half of the people have been allowed back in, but those with damaged apartments are looking for another place to stay.
“Where am I going? If I don't go back in there, where am I going?” Belcher said.
Belcher and many of the others affected do have family nearby they can stay with until their apartments are fixed and are safe again.
One of the owners tells WSAZ.com that management will foot the bill for any hotel rooms, if needed, and they will make sure those tenants still get the care they need.
They're expecting it to be a few days before all of that damage is fixed.
