CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia American Water has taken to its Facebook page to answer questions from customers.

In a post Saturday evening, the company said, "Many questions coming in about why the plant did not shut down when spill started. If the plant had shutdown, customers would have no water at all. A plant shutdown would have meant that there would have not been water for fire protection and basic sanitation. Our obligations to our communities are not just for drinking water, but also for public sanitation and fire protection. Under normal conditions, the plant would have been out of water within a few hours. Considering the presence of the chemical MCHM still in the Elk River, the plant would still be off at this time if that action had been taken."

The company has also used the site to dispel a rumor, "The DO NOT USE WATER NOTICE applies only for all West Virginia American Water customers in Kanawha, Boone, Putnam, Lincoln, Logan, Clay, Roane and Jackson counties, as well as customers in Culloden in Cabell County. The location of the chemical spill along the Elk River is not impacting our Huntington source of supply, the Ohio River."

A post from the company on Friday also dispelled a rumor about shutting off the water. "Alert: West Virginia American Water is NOT shutting off water to any customers as a result of the "do not use" order currently in place in the Kanawha Valley system. We are receiving widespread customer reports of false automated calls stating that West Virginia American Water is "shutting off water" and advising customers to fill their bathtubs, etc. This information is NOT accurate and did NOT come from West Virginia American Water. "

A press conference is scheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday. It will be aired live on WSAZ and WSAZ.com.
