CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The woman who ran over a West Virginia State Trooper during a shoplifting incident spoke out in court for the first time Monday.
Jennifer Garretson was sentenced Monday to two to ten years in prison. In October, Garretson pleaded guilty to malicious wounding in connection with the case.
She hit Sgt. Aaron Nicholas with her car when he was trying to stop her from shoplifting from a store at the St. Albans Mall on December 31, 2012.
Sgt. Nichols spent weeks in the hospital, suffering five fractures to his skull, a broken wrist and bleeding on his brain. He is expected to return back to active duty on January 1.
During her sentencing on Monday, Garretson told the court she was a drug addict and was sorry for what happened.
