70-Year-Old Charged after Attacking Deputies

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A 70-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly attacking deputies at a gas station.

Danny L. Thompson, 70, of Millfield, Ohio is being charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct by intoxication.

According to a release from Sheriff Pat Kelly, an off-duty reserve deputy was fueling his private vehicle at Crossroads service station in The Plains and observed a male staggering across the parking lot.

The deputy said the male lost his balance twice and almost fell to the concrete, according to the release.

According to the release, the man was walking to a green Dodge pickup with his keys in his hand which was parked directly in front of the deputy's vehicle. The deputy approached the man and asked if he was okay.

According to the release, the deputy said he could smell a strong odor of alcohol. The deputy then told the man he was with the Athens County Sheriff's Office and showed him his badge.

The deputy asked, "Is there somebody who can come pick you up?" The man replied "No, but I'll be home in a minute." According to the release, the man went on to say "I'm driving home and you can't stop me." He then advised the deputy that he is 70-years-old and that he could physically hurt the man. The deputy then called dispatch and advised them of the situation and asked that they send a unit to his location.

According to the release, the man then began hitting the deupty on both sides of the his head. The was advised that he was under arrest, but he continued to throw punches at the deputy.

According to the release, when Deputy Steve Sedwick arrived the male was subdued and handcuffed. The man continued to fight while handcuffed, kicking the reserve deputy and Deputy Sedwick several times in their legs. Deputy Jimmy Childs arrived and assisted in placing him in a cruiser for transport and was kicked in his upper shoulder/neck area.

Thompson was transported to the South Eastern Ohio Regional Jail.
