BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Nearly one dozen cows were found shot dead.
Three different farmers found some of their cattle dead in the pastures on Bailey Hill near the Industrial Park in Bell County.
At least 10 died and five others are still missing, according to the farmers.
"They went from each pasture and killed; selected certain ones and killed them out. Apparently they picked the very best, some real fine stock," said Carroll Gibbons.
The losses add up to $25,000 but it's more than a financial hit to these men.
"It's a personal thing. A farmer gets close to his stock. He knows his stock," said Gibbons.
The men found shell casings by two of the cows. They say there are two sets of four-wheeler tracks around the dead cattle.
The Bell County Sheriff's department is investigating. The farmers do not know a motive.
"It's hard to figure what goes through people's minds," said Gibbons. "They're gentle cows. They come right up to you and they mean nobody no harm."
The farmers are offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
Anyone with information should call the Bell County Sheriff's Department.
