A Nitro High School student is recovering after an overdose. Police say a fourteen year old girl took too much Xanax.
It happened Friday morning at the high school. Police say the girl was alert when she was taken to the hospital Friday morning. Students tell us they were surprised to see emergency crews at the school this morning and they wondered what was going on.
“I was walking through the bridge way and we saw two police cars and a fire truck. Then when were walking down the hall and then the next class we heard about it,” student Joshua Cobb said.
Police are not releasing the young girl's name at this time. Nitro’s principal would not comment on the incident for privacy reasons.

To Jack, the parents DO NOT need to be jailed! What an ignorant comment! Yes, it is a parents responsiblity to guide our children and teach them right from wrong, but we can't be w/ them @ all times monitoring their every move. And to CK, you need help! Taking 9-10 xanax is not cool or safe. And to suggest that its ok for a 14 yr. old to take xanax shows just how uneducated you really are about the drug. I hope you dont have children. I personally am on xanax for anxiety, but I only take it as prescribed. Our children are dying everyday because of drugs. And parents, ALWAYS lock up ALL your prescription medicine b/c you dont want you child or their friends getting into you medicine cabinet. Unfortunately, thats where kids get their drugs these days.
I am a nurse that works in the ER and have seen this on a daily basis almost. I also know several people that are highly addicted to Xanax why do you think it is a controlled substace I believe that it needs to be a class 2 controll, that would make it a little bit harder to get a hold of it. My heart and prayers goes out to the girl and hope that this is a life changing event. For the man that thinks it's okay to take 9-10 pills a day which is 9-10mg a day at work, I wanna know where you work so I can stay the heck away. That is extremly dangerous and then to think you probally go get in a car and drive home while me and my kids are on the road. THNKS FOR PUTTING YOUR ADDICTION FIRST BEFORE THINKING OF WHAT YOU COULD DO TO OTHERS.
To CK: What is your real problem or do you have the guts to tell?
