We’ve been telling you for the last couple of months the city of Logan is stepping up their vicious dog ordinance.

Enforcement of new laws will start next week. November 20th, which is next Tuesday, is the last day you have to register your dog.

The breeds that fit the requirement are Pit Bulls, Doberman Pinchers, Rottweilers or any dog of the Wolfe species.

There is a fee of $300 to register the animal. If the dog is not registered by the Tuesday deadline the city will quarantine the dog.

Why do you people try to put out there the half of the owners of pits ect... are drug dealers. What about single mothers that have them for protection and can't afford anything else on her plate. Do you think I have the money for a poodle? and lab...a home security system..umm Nope sure don't if you take care of you pet they will take care of you as well. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but before throwing it out there know what you are talking about. Thanks

It's sad and ridiculous that people who make laws regarding animals are so ignorant of the animals they seek to regulate, but it's even sadder when such people, who make laws that impact others, cannot even SPELL a first-grade spelling word! The word "wolf" does NOT have an "e" on the end, folks-this goes to show what happens when illiterate, uneducated people wind up in public office. Not only that, but apparently the genius behind this law(and I use that term with much sarcasm) didn't bother to do any research beyond the sensationalistic fear-mongering headlines. Since 1993, ALL domesticated dogs, of every breed, have been scientifically designated as Canis LUPUS familiaris-a mutated sub-species of WOLF. Every dog on the planet is of the "Wolf species"(again, no "e" in "wolf), so basically, that part restricts ALL dogs! Further, there is no one breed of dog called a "pit bull"; that is a media-fed catch-phrase for any shorthaired dog that someone is scared of.

The problem is that only decent law abiding pet owners will register their dogs, not the drug dealers who keep these animals for status and protection of their drug kingdom

Logan, WV has basically banned/restricted the ownership of all dogs. With the advent of the Canine Genome Project it is a fact proven by DNA that all domestic dog breeds were developed from canis familaris lupis, a sub-species of the gray wolf. Wolf-hybrid bans do, in fact, encompass all domestic breeds of dogs based upon DNA evidence. Logan should be sued for violation the Constitutional property rights of their residents, and for violating commerce laws. Cherie Graves Chairwoman Responsible Dog Owners of the Western States

This is dum, targeting a breed of dog and not the owners like this is the wrong way to go. The owner of the dog no matter what kind of dog including ankle bitters (they hurt or kill also)needs to be looked at on a case by case issue. Making everyone suffer due to a few idiots is also wrong. Its also against the constitution of the US to confiscate your dog ( property), and paying $300 dollars doesn’t do anything about dogs getting lose and running around. This is just another quick fix and get money idea from your elected officials. People need to stand up against such laws that eat away from the US constitution.

As someone who had a loved one bitten by a vicious dog, I think this is a great law. If nothing else, it may make people think before they buy the breed of dogs that have a tendency to bite. I know all dogs can bite, but these type of dogs have a history of being agressive. For those who say "oh my pit would not do that and is loving" just wait and we will see you on Judge Judy!

Who will foot the bill for the K9 unit dogs? Do you really think that people who have these "so called dangerous" dogs will foot the bill knowing that the state may pay for the K9 dogs? I personally know a blind woman who needs her dog. Now she is being penalized $300 for being blind? Another point, sadly there are persons who fight them. Do you really think this will make them come forward and register them at $300 a pop? Nobody will do that. What about breeders? If they have a litter, do they have to register each puppy?

I think it is a good idea to have these types of dogs registered. People think that this is crazy but it helps both the owner and the county, Plus some of these dogs are out there for the wrong reasons, if you cannot afford the 300 give your dog up, and get yourself a beagle or a poodle. half of the people that have these dogs are drug dealers, so give the county some of that hard earned drug money or give up your dog!!

This is unconstatitional there stealing money whats next you own a cat give us $250.00 or you have a opossum pay us $400.00.This ordinance should only apply to people who get dogs after it was passed.

Another ridiculous law that is not needed . What good does registering a dog do ? I hope no one bothers to comply .

Posted by: Corey on Nov 15, 2007 at 11:04 AM
What purpose does registering the dog do? Forcing someone to pay $300 to register a dog seems ridiculous, especially if they are kind and loving owners. I hope this doesn't mean that an innocent dog and its owner will have to suffer just because someone may not have $300 to throw around for frivilous laws. Please tell us more, WSAZ.

Congrats to Logan. It's about time someone addresses the dog problem in the cities. The owners can cry all they want about how great the animal is, but the truth of the attacks come forth every day. Time to protect the citizen and to hold the animal owner accountable.

I hate to tell em, but even a little chihuahua can be vicious. And correct me if I am wrong but "of wolf species"? It's a dog, of course it's of wolf species. I own a doberman, and I understand the whole keeping control thing over your pets, because people are afraid of them, and they have a trigger, like all dogs. But $300 is a little much don't you think. I dont even think my dog cost that much to live inside the house. Here's something to think of as funny, Who's the brave one to go up to the houses and check with all the "vicious" dogs there?

Dobermans are raely bred to be vicious anymore. More attacks occur from german Shepherds than Dobermans

Doberman, Pit Bull's and Rottweiler's serve as Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs as well as K9 Officers in some parts of the country. The reason some are vicious is due to lack of proper training, lack of socialization, improper breeding, being left outside and not treated as a family member. If you want the true solution to this problem, register and quarantine the irresponsible dog owner. I don't live in Logan County, but I am the owner of a Doberman and a Pit. They are trained, socialized and loved. They are perfect and I trust them 100% in any situation.
