Student leaders on West Virginia State Universities Campus Saturday stood up for strengthening hate crime laws.
The reason for the rally is the Megan Williams Case. Williams is the young woman from Charleston allegedly raped and tortured in Logan County.
Today students at the historically African American School say it's a fight they're not only familiar with - it's one they plan to fight at the West Virginia State Capitol next session.
Austin Moore is a member of the WVSU Student Body Government.
"We felt that wvsu has an illustrious history as a historically black university. And when our neighbors become targets of hate, we're all affected," Moore says.
"We feel that the state hate crimes statue should have protected megan williams," Moore went on to say, " but it is too weak."
Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham has not ruled out filing hate crime charges but he still hasn't filed them.
Megan Williams was not at Saturday's event.
