JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- While many people are doing spring cleaning in their homes, sheriff's deputies in Johnson County are spring cleaning the streets with a drug warrant roundup.
Deputies knocked on doors starting at 8 a.m. Thursday to arrest 12 people who have been indicted on felony drug charges by a Johnson County grand jury.
"I feel I can speak for the community. We're just sick of the drugs," Sheriff Dwayne Price said.
The strategy -- get to people's houses early.
"Most people that sell drugs, they're up all night and they sleep all day," Price said. "If you go in the early morning hours, you're more than likely to catch them before they get out and start moving about."
Most of the people getting arrested are well-known to these deputies, who have been buying drugs from them undercover.
"We have two deputies dedicated to doing drug buys," Chief Deputy Kevin Pelphrey said. "These have been ongoing investigations since for the last three to three-and-a-half months."
By making at least two or three buys from each person, Price said, they can build a stronger case for conviction.
"It helps us in court, it shows a pattern. Somebody can't say, 'Well, I just did it one time and made a mistake,'" Price said.
Joey Young is one of the people deputies arrested Thursday. He said he debated running when he heard a knock on the door, but ultimately, he decided to stay.
"My kid was in the house and it wasn't my house," Young said. "I figured it'd be best for me. Maybe I can bond out."
Young said he wasn't sure what charges he'd face. He mentioned that he had a gun and had previously been convicted of a felony for a burglary. Price said that makes him a persistent felony offender, in addition to the drug charges he'll face.
Deputies said they hope this will be a deterrent to other drug dealers.
"[We'll] try our best to rid Johnson County of its drugs. I know it's a daunting task, but it's what the people elected us to do," Pelphrey said.
Price said people in the community can help in the battle against drugs by calling and leaving anonymous tips if they see anything suspicious. Investigators can take it from there.
