ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A 12-year-old boy was badly burned in a house fire in Athens County Saturday morning, according to Athens County Sheriff, Pat Kelly.

The fire was at a house in the 11000 block of Ten Spot Road near Carbondale in Athens County.

Sheriff Pat Kelly says the homeowner told deputies that her son had friends staying over and one of the visiting boys woke her up to say the house was on fire.

The woman also told deputies that she, her boyfriend and the boys then fled the house through a rear door since there was fire coming from the front part of the house. Once outside they realized that one of the boys was still in the house.

Kelly says that witnesses could hear the boy screaming. The boyfriend then went back inside the burning house and brought the badly burned boy out.

Kelly identified the boy as Justin Dye. Dye was taken to an Athens hospital and later transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus where he remains in critical condition Monday morning.

A publishable report says Dye was one of the friends staying overnight.

There was no word on how the fire started.
