Update: One of the men shot over the weekend in Charleston is improving. A nurse at CAMC says Emanuel McCarty is improving. He's been upgraded to satisfactory condition.

One is dead, one is in critical condition and several are injured after multiple shootings in Charleston Saturday morning.

Police have arrested 18 year-old Antonio Jefferies and 20 year-old Charles Moore and charged them with first degree murder in the death of Andrew Smoot. He's 20 years old. Police made the arrest around 9 Saturday morning.

Police say it all started around 3:30 a.m. outside the American Legion Club when someone shot Emmanuel McCarty and Desmond Clark. Police and witnesses say a friend of one of the victims followed the shooter to his home in the 1500 block of Washington Street East. That's when police say Smoot was shot and killed. Officers aren't saying if Smoot was involved in the shooting at the club.

Police tell us that things then moved to 1700 Kemp Avenue where Moore and Jefferies were involved in a drive-by shooting where several shots were fired. At this time, no victims have been reported from that shooting.

According to the criminal complaint, Moore and Jefferies were arrested at the corner of 6th Avenue and Stockton Street in Charleston. The complaint states Moore was wearing a bullet proof vest when he was arrested. Officers also say in the car where Moore and Jefferies were located, they found a Tec-9mm.

The criminal complaint also says Desmond Clark, Emmanuel McCarty, Charles Moore, and Antonio Jefferies were all hanging out together at the club prior to the shooting.

When did this all of the sudden turn into a "racis" deal? Its not about the color of your skin, Its about making MAJOR life choices. These men made the wrong choise, that doesn't mean get on here and Put all the African American people down because a few people made mistakes. White people are just as guilty. Its just not shown as much. Its just like the War right now, they don't show all the things that happen. Just a few highlights. people would probably be amazed at how much really is wrong with the world if they showed it all. childofgod: I am happy that you are making a beter life for yourself. I have the up-most respect for you in what you are accomplishing. May God Bless you. My heart goes out to the families involved in this. My prayers go out to the shooters. Don't look at this as what race is doing what wrong. I am not making any excuses for anyone. Just pray for the ones hurting and the ones doing the hurting. GOD BLESS!!!

What does racism have to do with this? Weren't all the people involved black? How is it white peoples fault? Why do you want to be a street thug? Sorry, but I'd rather live, than be shot down in an alley somewhere because 50 cent said it's cool to get shot and go to jail. Everybodies talking about living by the gun, but why? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If you live that life, then all the racist white people are right about you. Why don't you try going to school or church? I know Ja-Rule says it's selling out.... But do you really think all these "gangsta rappers" that you look up too AREN'T selling out? Get real, wake up... Nobodies scared of thugs anymore, it's turned into a joke. People see wannabe gangstas and laugh at you. I'll tell you what... After I finish college, and make good money in a good job and start a nice family, I'll come and visit you in prison.. I may even bring you Young Bucks new CD...

To sick and Tired: this is way off subject but i would just like to enlighten you on a few things! I am an African American female in college trying to make a better life for myself, and I have never used my race as an excuse for any of the travesties I have experienced on this long journey. But let me make it clear, if you are African American please believe that other races already have a predispositioned view of you no matter if you act a certain way or not! WE as a race do have it hard but I am not using that as an excuse,it just makes me work harder to prove the superior race otherwise! If you do not see racism against Blacks in America its because you are ignoring it, and we don't need your pity we are just trying to make you aware of this injust behavior and maybe make a change! To all the families affected by this unfortunate event I lift you up in my prayers! By all means, WE ALL as a PEOPLE have got to do better! Keep these children involved and sit down and talk 2 them!

FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE MY PRAYERS OUT TO THE FAMILIES WHO ARE HURTING IN THIS TIME OF PAIN. I AM A YOUNG ADULT AND HAS LOST A LOVE ONE TO THE STREETS AND MCCARTY IS ALSO A RELATIVE OF MINE.NO, I DONT THINK ITS RIGHT FOR THE NEWS AND OTHERS DISCUSS THEIR CRIMNALS RECORDS BECAUSE THAT IS THEIR PERSONAL LIVES. WHAT THEY DID IN THEIR LIVES DONT MEAN THAT THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GOT.THEY ALL HAD CHILDREN INSTEAD OF TALKIN DOWN ABOUT THEM, U SHOULD WANT TO TRY TO HELP TO SOCIETY SO ALL OF OUR LIVES WOULD FEEL SAFE.EVEN IF ITS JUST GIVING SOMEONE YOUNG A GOOD ADVICE,U NEVER KNOW WHAT THAT ADVICE MIGHT DO FOR THEM.I KNOW THE SAYIN U LIVE BY THE GUN U DIE BY ONE.LIFE IS SHORT WE NEED TO BE A COMMUNITY THAT UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER. LIKE THE MAN UP ABOVE SAID LOVE THY NEIGHBOR.ITS NOT ABOUT RACE NOW DAYS YOU SEE MORE WHITES THAN BLACKS LIVIN THE STREET LIFE.STOP JUDGING AND START TO HELP HEALING .WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH TIME LEFT

Posted by: donnie on Dec 10, 2007 at 04:51 PM
why do you brag about "livin' by da gun"? What kind of life is that? live in fear for your family and yourself? if 2Pac and Biggie are your heros, think about this: they're both dead. If you want to live the "gangsta" life, realize that all these "gangstas" that you emulate are going to wind up broke, incarcerated, or dead. You really wanna strap a gat?

Posted by: D on Dec 10, 2007 at 02:19 PM
TO Princ3ss : Who are you protecting yourselves from ? EACH OTHER RIGHT ? Are you saying you were "trained" to shoot people if they make you angry or don't agree with you, or if you're just bored ? Put the guns down and pick up a book. Solve these problems with intelligence and not violence.

First I am very sorry for the families involved in this. Me being a young adult, I have to look at this and ask myself, do I want to raise children in a world like what we live in today. Its a scary thought. I don't have any children, but one day I would love to, but its scary knowing that this could happen to them. This is supposed to be a FREE country. When you really take a look at it, is it really? Its costing people money, family, and their lives. My heart goes out to these families. May God Bless You!!I pray for the shooters.

I was wondering if Manny is JoJo's son. I knew her and she was a good friend to me when I needed one. I know this would've broke her heart, he was her life.

To Wing: MOVE..MOVE..MOVE....if WV is so racist why are you still here? there is no more racism than any other state. blacks are the MOST RACIST people that i have ever encountered. you want everyone to feel sorry for you and pity you, well we do not..get a job, get a life and quit putting the blame everywhere except where it belongs....people that do not work for a living have NO LIFE...that my man, is their fault not racism. with no job, there is too much time on their hands...time to think of who to rob, who to shot, who to stab, who to rip off in a drug deal, who to kill to get their drugs. endless cycle, get a job and get a real life. And if all would of been in jail where their rap sheets say they belong, then we would not be having this debate.

One thing i forgot to put in my post.there record is public record and anyone can go to the court house and get info on anyone that has been in trouble or you can go online and get the info also.

Posted by: logangirl on Dec 9, 2007 at 11:27 PM
Look, for those who done this should be done the same way. If they wanted to go kill someone why didn't they just do it to themselves? I use to live in charleston and so I know how charleston is. It's not really bad unless you get around the bad crew. If they want to treat people like animals then they need to be treated like animals themselves. My prayers are with the families. May god bless you all.

ALL YOU YOUNG PEOPLE NEED STOP THE MADNESS. THEIR IS MORE TO LIFE THEN MONEY AND DRUGS. WE AS BLACK PEOPLE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER AND NOT SHOOTING AND KILLING EACH OTHER. SPANISH, CUBAN'S, MEXICAN'S ALL STICK TOGETHER. THE DON'T HURT THEIR OWN. THAT'S WHY WE ARE IN THE SITUATION THAT WE ARE IN . BLACK PEOPLE DON'T THNIK THEY JUST REACT. THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCE BEFORE REACTING. IT'S EASY TO GET IN TO TROUBLE AND NOT SO EASY TO GET OUT OF THE TROUBLE. IF YOU HAVE HATERED TOWARDS ONE INDIVIDUAL PRAY FOR YOURSELF AS WELL AS THE OTHER INDIVIDUAL. GOD WILL SHOW YOU THE WAY. MAY GOD BLESS ALL THE FAMILIES INVOLVED.

I jus watn 2 say that I feel 4 Smoot's family, and I hope that Manny (Emmanuel)gets well soon. I thounght that the murder of Chase in August would be a wake up call 2 these ppl out there, but I guess not. Kids these days are so quick 2 pick up a gun. R.I.P. Chase and R.I.P. Smoot. Everyone misses you. See you when I get there.

Wing, I agreed with your statement until the very end when you lumped the entire state with one racist comment. Racism isn't a one way street. I don't believe in reverse racism. That is a paradox that doesn't exist. Racism is racism. Negative and ignorant people belong in every community, and that is the saddest thing I could type. It will take all colors to realize that and come together.

Posted by: We are protected on Dec 9, 2007 at 04:16 PM
The comment about the user fee and police not providing protection sounds like pure ignorance. The police in Charleston are great, and provide a wonderful service to the people. Police can't be everywhere at all times, and crimes are gonna happen. Seems like they were doing a pretty good job the other night, since two people are under arrest for murder, and a tech-9 handgun was taken off the street. Great job CPD, keep up the good work. Hooray for the user fee!!!

Posted by: myself on Dec 9, 2007 at 03:37 PM
Lets stay off the police and lets start taking responsibility for our own actions> one big problem with this great country is the need to blame! its always someone elses fault, lets make people take blame for what they do, stop blaming parents, teachers, police, scol, money, n e thing you can come up with. lets get bak to the fundamentals of good morals and values. lets quit playing the vicitm card> if u kill, rape, steal u HAVE NO RIGHTS

WHY WERE THEY IN AN AMERICAN LEGION CLUB IN THE FIRST PLACE, SUPPOSE TO BE FOR VETERANS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: WING on Dec 9, 2007 at 07:57 AM
I knew Smoot, Moore, McCarty, and Clark's oldest brother and family members of all if these young men. Why are we killing each other when there is so much hatred out here by those in the dominant society. When we kill or hurt one another, we are giving those that hate Black people more reason to believe we are less than human. AS BLACK PEOPLE, WE ARE MUCH MORE THAN THAT!!! QUIT PROVING OTHER RACES RIGHT!!! WHEN THEY SAY WE ARE NOTHING, VIOLENT, UNEDUCATED, UNCIVILIZED, AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS NEGATIVE, KNOW THAT WE ARE MUCH MORE THAN THAT!!! IT'S TIME THAT WE UPLIFT ONE ANOTHER AND QUIT DESTROYING OURSELVES OVER NONSENSE! CHERISH WHAT'S LEFT OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY BEFORE WE ALL BECOME EXTINCT!!! THERE ARE OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS ESPECIALLY IN RACIST WEST VIRGINIA THAT WILL LOVE NOTHING BETTER. WHEN WE KILL AND DESTROY EACH OTHER, WE PUT THE SMILES ON THEIR FACES BECAUSE IT IS ONE LESS PERSON THAT IS IN THE STATE!!! STOP THE MADNESS!!!

It seems this happens every year at this time.Where does one get a bullet prouf vest, when our officers are out working to protect us without them? We should find out where the guns are comming from also .this is terrible! GIVE ME THE COUNTRY LIFE ANYTIME! I couldn;t live in Charleston to much violence.

Posted by: a what cost is protection on Dec 9, 2007 at 12:12 AM
There is no doubt about it that this is a true tragedy.I pay the Charleston user fee for things as "extra police protection" The Cares Center right next door to the legion. If the police would stop harassing law abiding citizens they would be visible in areas that are known to have this type of activity. I can recall when another incident resulting in deaths took place at that same location a few years ago. im just speaking on behalf of the consumer/payee of the user fee. who are they WILLING to help? I’m almost certain that if this would have taken place in So. Hills that the continuation of theses incidents would have been isolated by police much faster. It is fact that they always arrive to“assist”after such fatalities in “OUR” communities. Is it not the job of the CPD to serve & protect? MY question is where is the protection? What are we preserving, other than building and for roadways… Clearly not the lives of the citizens of Charleston. My prayers are with everyone involved. There is a higher power, pray for the protection of OUR children & community.

Prayer is needed here before the whole city becomes a shooting range. Please everyone take interest and if you see that kid that needs some help step up and try to do the right thing and get them off the streets and out of these horrible clubs. This is a total shame and if more kids were raised in church they would have those values in them. I feel for all the families involved and I am praying this stops before Charleston becomes like all of the big cities. Please bring the bible back to the schools. Prayer is needed!

I know what we do as young people are wrong but at the same time you have to look at all of the good things we do for ourselves and other people.Even though most of us live by the gun and some of us die by the bullet we are consider as a protector and we will protect what is ours by any means necessary. So yeah I will be the first to admitt what happen was wrong but what's so wrong about doing what you was trained to do as a youth as long as we let the kids no for next generation what's right and what's wrong that is all that matters. My heart goes out to the family of the Clark, Moore, McCarty, and Jeffery you'll be in my prayers. This situation won't break yall it will make yall

i know every one that was shot, killed and the people that was suppose to had done this.Im cool with everyone that was involved. Andrew was a trouble maker some what. And my grandmother always told me if you live by the gun you die by the gun. Andrew stayed shooting at someone. He shot a man on west washington st. last year. then before that he shot at a couple of New Yorkers. He shot at some guys getting of the school busand could have hit any one. bullets do not have a name on them at all. Im sorry it had to end like this. I hope it is just a wake up to all these other kids.Guns are not the answer. All three men that were shot and or killed have children there selves and they are the ones that are going to suffer from this cause how are you going to explain to the kids when they want there daddys that daddys not here no more. I wish everyone would think before there actons. My prayers go out to the smoot, Clark, and McMcarty family.

YOUNG PEOPLE, PLEASE STOP THE KILLINGS. LIFE HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER YOU. REMEMBER BECAUSE YOU ARE IN THE STREETS, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THE STREETS HAS TO BE IN YOU! I'LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU.
