Fire destroyed a two story apartment building in South Point, Ohio early Sunday morning, leaving two families homeless.

Firefighters responded to the alarm around 1:45 Sunday morning and tell WSAZ.com the flames were already shooting from the roof and windows of the building when they arrived. Two families living in the building were able to get out unharmed.

The building, one of four similar duplex buildings that make up the complex on Stanley Drive, was heavily damaged by the flames.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about half an hour. The fire was contained to the one building. Firefighters from the South Point Volunteer Fire Department and three neighboring departments responded.

Firefighters say they don't know what started the fire yet. An investigator from the State Fire Marshal's Office is expected on the scene early Sunday morning.

Recently, my family and I lost everything we owned in a house fire. I wanted to comment on the Excellent response time our local Red Cross provided and the services that they provided were wonderful. The Manager Mark Workman with the Grandview Inn played a big part working with the Red cross in helping us through one of the toughest times in our lifes. Mr. Workman and his staff went above and beyond our expectations in providing us with exellent accomadations and Mr. Workman took money from his personal pocket and paid for my families dinner the day after the fire. Mr. Workman also put us in touch with many organizations and people in our communinty who helped us pull our lifes back together. I think we are very fortunate to have people who care so much in our community the Red Cross and People like Mr. Workman--The Granview in staff go very un noticed for their support and comfort in our times of need in the community. It is devastating to loose EVERYTHING you have.A speacial th

We need to thank our Volunteer Firefighters daily for the unselfishness and Heroic acts they take on regularly. I don't feel they get the recognition they deserve for taking time from their families to help those families that they may not even know when Duty calls. My Hat is off to "ALL of YOU" Brave men and Women of our Volunteer Fire Departments, may God hold a special place in his Heart for you!!! You ARE True Heros...
