Doctors at Teays Pediatrics in Teays Valley say they've seen a number of children with strep pharyngitis or strep throat. That's diagnosed through a swab of the back of the throat that the little ones hate and it's treated with antibiotics.

They're also seeing para-influenza, which is a group of viruses that causes croup among other things. Its symptoms can include sore throat, hoarseness, cough and congestion.

They're also seeing a lot of flu-like symptoms in children, but none of these cases has been positive for influenza.

At University Pediatrics in Huntington, doctors are seeing a variety of respiratory and gastric viruses, causing coughing and congestion, and stomach problems respectively. They're also seeing some cases of RSV, Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

In Ashland, doctors at Ashland Children's Clinic are seeing children with a headache and fever. This is not associated with meningitis, which has the same symptoms.

They're also seeing children with those pesky middle ear infections.

Something new for your vocabulary, but probably nothing new for you or your child's immune system. Doctors at Tri-State Pediatrics in Ashland say they're seeing kids with metapneumovirus. It's a respiratory tract infection. Studies show virtually all children have been exposed to it by the time they're five, but reinfections are common. It typically causes mild symptoms, except in the very young when it can become a more serious problem.

They're also seeing RSV, another common respiratory bug, among children. It's also of the most concern among the very young, especially premature babies.

The doctors are also diagnosing strep throat, mononucleosis and mycoplasma. Mono causes fever, severe fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, sore muscles and an enlarged spleen. Mycoplasma attacks the respiratory system with symptoms including coughing and sore throat.

At Rebecca Schoettle Pedatrics in Portsmouth, Dr. Schoettle is seeing a lot of kids with a cough, cold and sore throat, though no specific bugs are causing the illnesses.
