The doctors' office is a very busy place these days, because there is a lot going around.

Schools are noticing a lot of absences these days due to plenty of nasty germs going around.

Dr. Gilbert Goliath in South Charleston has seen a lot of children with RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus. For older patients, RSV just causes typical cold symptoms, but it can lead to serious complications for the very young, especially premature babies. RSV is highly contagious and most often spread through coughing and sneezing.

Dr. Goliath is also seeing children with stomach virus that’s causing nausea and vomiting. Pneumonia is also making a lot of people sick. Its symptoms include coughing, fever, chills and rapid breathing.

He’s also seeing kids with croup, which causes a deep, distinctive cough.

Doctors at Tri-State Pediatrics in Ashland are also seeing typical illnesses for the season, such as the flu, stomach virus and mononucleosis, which is a virus that can cause a number of symptoms including fever, severe fatigue, sore throat and headache. It can make you sick for three to four weeks.

Yes, I have definitely noticed that a lot of people have been coming down with something lately. I started to get sick early last week with what I thought was the flu but it turned out to be a mix between that and some time of strep. It's the most bizarre thing that I've experienced in quite a while. Best wishes to those who are still sick!

I have a six year old child, who has had vomiting and diarrhea since early to mid January. I took her to the doctor to be told that there is something going around and it must run its course. Monday a week ago, I took my child back, because the previous visit I was told it should clear up within in a week. It did not. My child has been diagnoised with an Intestinal bacterial infection called C. diff. Per the internet this is something typically found in elderly who have been in the hospital or taking or taken an antibiotic. My child is not elderly, had not been on any type of antibiotic for at least 6 months. If your children are vomiting with diarrhea, fever and/or flu like syptoms and it is not getting any better, have them checked. My child has lost 4 lbs. since mid-January. This is nothering to play with. Parents take this seriously!!! The answer of it has to run its course, is not the answer, ours doctors must do their jobs!!!

My kids have been sick a lot this winter also. Right now, my oldest has the runny nose, cough, low grade fever and my youngest who just got over it is getting it again! My husband and I both had the flu. And every time we have been to the doctor they say it has to run it's course. Th recommend you don't give your young children OTC meds but they don't give us anything at the doctor either.

Yes I and people I know have been sick for a couple of months with respiratory & stomach symptoms. Just start to get better and then something else hits. I hope it goes away soon.

Ms. Moss, thank you for providing this report, it is helpful to those of us with children and elderly in our care. Let me also say that I think WSAZ does a fairly good job including my area of residence, especially considering where I live- Vanceburg, KY (but not Vanceburg proper). I believe we are the very furthest part of your viewing area. I would respectfully request that you check with a medical facility closer to my home to report "what's going around" here. Thank you for your report, time, and consideration. Jackie Jordan
