The blue haze that hung over Kanawha County a few weeks ago may not have been just a weather occurrance.
According to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, the John Amos power plant has released far more sulfuric acid into the air than was previously disclosed.
State regulators don't have exact estimates, but the DEP says it was roughly four times greater than AEP told regulators and residents.
That could amount to several million pounds a year of unreported toxic chemicals.
Earl Billingsly is the supervisor for air inspectors at the state's DEP, and he says that is significantly higher than what the plant had previously reported.
