UPDATE @ 2PM
HUNTINGTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police say Marshall student Leah Hickman was strangled -- and there are no signs that she was sexually assaulted.

Did police release enough information to the public?
Yes
No

Police say they do not believe Leah's murder was a random act -- and they believe the person or people responsible for the crime was/were "familiar with" Leah and the layout of her apartment building.

Police say they are not going to release the results of the DNA tests at this point in their investigation.

Police say they haven't excluded anyone with regard to suspects in the case -- and this is still a very active case.

Police say they met with Leah's family Wednesday prior to Thursday's news conference.

Huntington Police say tests are continuing and the investigation continues to involve multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and West Virginia State Police.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- WSAZ has confirmed that the Huntington Police Department will hold a news conference at 2pm regarding the Leah Hickman murder case.

A news release from the Huntington Police Criminal Investigations Bureau states that it "will be a brief meeting on the status of the Hickman investigation" -- but WSAZ's Dave Benton has learned that police are expected to release cause of death, evidence, and direction of the case.

Leah Hickman was the Marshall student who went missing on December 14th. Her body was found a week later in a crawl space in the basement of her apartment building.

As far we know, nobody has been arrested in the case. Police have been tight-lipped about the investigation.

WSAZ.com & WSAZ NewsChannel 3 will carry a live feed of the news conference at 2pm.

Stay with WSAZ.com for the latest information.

To JB: You might think that this is old news and everyone should be focused on "today's crimes", but you don't realize that this is still an issue. I am pretty sure that you would still be concerned about the crime if it was someone you knew. I suggest that you try to understand and sympathize with the people that really care about Leah and want justice to be brought to this case.

Posted by: Anon. on May 6, 2008 at 12:05 PM
TO JB!!!!! If you have kids then you should understand that it is very important for family and friends to find out what happened. So instead of getting on here complaining about it being "old News" quit reading it all and only read the "new News" and you don't have to worry about it. I love Leahs family with my whole heart and am still praying for all of you.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 2, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Yes, it is taking too long. The longer a case goes, the more likely it will never be solved. I think at the 4 1/2 month mark, unless someone confesses, this will go down as an unsolved crime. The HPD isn't waiting months & months to set up some dramatic arrest. Either they have no idea who it is, or an idea & no way to prove it. Now, that doesn't mean it's the HPD's fault, but it's still a fact.

Posted by: ANON on May 1, 2008 at 12:40 PM
People, please! It's not taking "so long" to solve this case.H-ton's finest quit trying to solve it a long time ago! They collected their checks from Detroit, turned their backs and shut their eyes.A blessing for Leah, she doesn't have to worry about any of this.

Posted by: anony. on May 1, 2008 at 09:05 AM
Well lets see if we can go another 5-6 months before we know more about this terrible crime. I think the HDP are just dragging their feet. They are probably no where close to solving this murder. How can they solve this when they can't even rid the streets of Huntington of the drug criminals. Huntington is not safe anymore. People are scared, children are growning up surrounded with all types of crime. We as a community need to take a stand. Things are going to get worse because of the high prices nationwide. People are going to be doing crazy acts just to survive also. It's time we take back our community and rid the scum that lies within it. Thoughts and prayers are with the Hickman family, may Gods love bring you through this tragedy.

Posted by: Joe on May 1, 2008 at 07:55 AM
Man, who ever committed this crime is going to die of old age before HPD solves this one. Maybe we should sprinkle some drunk college kids around the crime scene to get them involved again...

Posted by: Bev on Apr 30, 2008 at 03:23 AM
I completely agree with the fact that HPD shouldn't release information to the public that will jeopardize this case. I just feel that this site helps the community voice our fears. Most comments are not rude and hurtful (though some are way over the top) just people needing to know that our daughters are safe. I know that sounds stupid and naive but yes we are fearful for our kids. Anybody who says they aren't are lying. Just because HPD tells us they do not think it is random doesn't make it true. I have faith in HPD when it comes to busting drug dealers but come on folks they are not too good at solving murders.

I just want to give my condolences to the Hickman family. I had met Leah a few times over the past couple of years. She actually camped out at my appartment last summer so I did know her and she was a wonderful person. Very sweet young girl! It's such an awful thing that has happened to her. In regards to all these comments where your blaming the HPD for not knowing who did this and for not solving the case yet...maybe they have solved the case, but they can not release a description of the killer(s) or the names of who they think is responsible because they may run and then the case would never be solved. Therefore, you should give them several more months before you try to accuse the police department of not goin a good job or not being able to cash their paychecks til they find the killer...that's rediculous!!! I hope from now on you'll show the HPD more respect. I do hope though that when they catch the killer(s), they get what they deserve!!! R.I.P Leah Hickman

Posted by: JB on Apr 29, 2008 at 07:39 PM
"OLD NEWS" Get off it!! Bad things are still happening! Let's concentrate on the today's crimes.

Posted by: Ramvan on Apr 28, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Finally I get some back up on here. Thanks Aaron.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 28, 2008 at 01:14 PM
Okay Dave the last thing HPD needs to worry about is college kids with pot.. Yeah that shouldnt be happening either.. but what about catching the murderers and trash that brings drug dealers ( who deal much more serious stuff than pot ) into Huntington. I graduated from Marshall and the entire time I was there I felt like every police officer was more worried about giving a student an underage ticket or coming over for being noisy, rather than protecting us all from drug dealers and murderers... THAT is the bigger problem and it is not because of rich college kids.. its because of the thugs and white trash that keep the drug dealers in business!

Posted by: Aaron on Apr 28, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Until the investigation is complete, why does the public need to know anything? The suspect is out there among the public and I am sure whoever that might be, they are waiting for any news too. Let HPD do their job and leave them alone. I am also sure that it doesn't help the family by bickering on here, they have been through enough. Justice will be served in due time.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 28, 2008 at 12:07 AM
you know thats the thing i hate about living in wv.. you could be standing over a dead body with bloody knife in hand and say oh i just found this and there would be no questions asked.

Posted by: judy on Apr 26, 2008 at 02:11 AM
leah was such a beautiful girl i did not know her but i think she is some mothers child and i think for the sake of the family that justice should be served ihope this murder is not like the others in huntington that remain un solved what is the problem here in this town by just letting things like this go my heart goes out to the family of leah and the other familys

Posted by: Andi on Apr 25, 2008 at 11:23 PM
What the heck is the problem? Why is her murder not solved? WE WANT ANSWERS NOW!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe these guys at the police department cash their paychecks. They shouldn't get paid until the job is done. T

Posted by: Dave on Apr 25, 2008 at 08:56 PM
Well if all these college kids would stop encouraging and supporting the drug dealers maybe the HPD could do something other than bust rich kids with pot.

Posted by: ... on Apr 23, 2008 at 09:07 PM
Okay, boys! It's time to get this one solved. I get that "This isn't CSI," but it's also not 1920!! What is the hold up? For months we were held at bay with "We're waiting on lab results," and the next thing to be released was "She was strangled." Tell me, what LAB RESULTS told you that?! Looking at her BODY in DECEMBER told you that. So now you have your results and we still don't have any answers. This is so disheartening for the public, I can't imagine what her poor family is going through. You're humiliating yourselves and losing any respect that the public had left for the HPD. This is one of the worst crimes to hit Huntington in recent years and it appears as though no effort is being put toward solving it. Don't forget Leah, don't forget her family. I have thought about her everyday since this happened, if you were doing the same it would have been solved months ago. Leah may never get justice.

Posted by: Ramvan on Apr 23, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Well Bev I appreciate your thoughts. All I am saying is that if WSAZ wont do a better job of keeping the childish comments off here then they should just shut it down. As for a whole community living in fear over this tradegy, I think that is a touch much. Horrible things happen in all parts of the country and the world every day, if we all followed suit with what you are saying it would be a world of agoraphobics and anxiety ridden zombies. There is nothing wrong with general concern but Fear? Also the police have determined that this was not an act of random violence. I understand the curiosity that this type of thing brings but what are updates from the police or WSAZ going to do? I am sure if they had information that they felt would lead to a capture of a suspect they would hold a press conference. But just giving random updates does nothing but feed peoples curiosity and nothing to further the case.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 22, 2008 at 09:42 PM
you would think they would know something by now, or at least let the public know something, give the family some piece. It has gone to long without answers. I send my prayers to the family. May God bless them in this horrible time. Lock this person up who has comitted this horrible crime to such a beautiful person.

i hope the best for her family ............ the family is in my pray's

Posted by: Bev on Apr 22, 2008 at 02:42 PM
TO RAMVAN: I can only try to understand the pain that Leah's family and friends are going through. I too am disgusted by some of the childish comments on here. Having said that I applaud WSAZ.COM for keeping us informed. We are ALL scared, the whole community is afraid. We just want to know who hurt this child so they can be punished. This forum helps us to cope with our pain. It also helps us let Leah's family know that we DO care what happens in this investigation. That the public is not going to let her murder be shoved under the rug. I feel your pain and disgust. God bless you too.

To our Great Governor , please just get the HPD off this & Get the State Police & The FBI on this , something wrong with this .

Posted by: JK on Apr 21, 2008 at 08:33 PM
I attend Marshall University, and as a student and fellow member of society; I believe the police need to atleast update the general public as to their "ideas" or some sort of information to ease not only our minds but the minds of the FAMILY of Leah. I think Leah's family has the righ to see justice served!!! And to the family, I will continue to Pray for you.

Posted by: Family Member on Apr 21, 2008 at 02:35 PM
It is so difficult to go day after day hoping they find the guilty person(s) who took Leah from us. An agonizing pain that never leaves. We just keep praying and try to keep faith that we will receive news soon.

Posted by: Hope on Apr 21, 2008 at 08:48 AM
What a shame Leah. I never thought we'd be this far along without answers. I so sorry for your family and what they must be going through. I've said it once and I'll say it again, if the family hasn't already hired their own PI to investigate, they need to.

Seems this story is dwindling away! DON'T LET IT HAPPEN! TELL US SOMETHING WSAZ!!!

Posted by: Freedom on Apr 17, 2008 at 07:12 AM
I never knew Elvis to be RUDE. Sounds to me as if someone wants local voices to go away.. Wonder why? Perhaps with no pressure the killer may never be found? Regardless of all this a killer lurks among us. If the police is so certain this is an isolated case whats the big hold up? I hear that soon we can get DNA testing in stores?? The police should have kept this case high profile with the proper agencies involved. It shows how much the Justice systems are failing across America..God Bless the Hickman family and all the other unsolved cases out there in which families are waiting for Justice.

JUST STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!11

Posted by: STEVE on Apr 15, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Hey Ramvan..if this "blog" is so disgusting, then why do you come here everyday to read comments and post comments ? You think that you are allowed to voice your opinion and no one else is ?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 01:37 PM
I think that WSAZ should do some kind of update on this case. Whether it be THE POLICE HAVE NOTHING NEW!! or SOMETHING!! ANYTHING!! We have a concerned community who wants answers and justice. Not nosey people! Concerned people!

Posted by: Elvis on Apr 14, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Hey wanna be, your name says it all... you're just that "a wanna be" but hey thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge. Having said that Elvis has now left the building...

My prayers are with Leah's family! I hope you find the truth and this horrible crime is solved! With that being said, I would like to comment to "Elvis" and his remarks on this discussion: DNA tests do take some time to get back, depending on where the test is being done. Many locations are "backlogged" now- meaning they have tests from years or months past that haven't been finished yet. This in turn leads to delayed results, even if the results are needed ASAP. And I can speak this and tell you "Elvis" I am an expert on the subject and have the degree to prove it! It's a shame you have such a nasty attitude for Kathy's question; I can see why you are not an expert. Sheer lack of caring is enough to keep you out of this field of work. So I suppose know you can considered yourself educated by someone that knows first hand how the system works because I work in it. Also I would like to add that Moon Pies are awesome in the microwave Kathy, so if you have any, fix one for me!

Posted by: Ramvan on Apr 11, 2008 at 09:59 PM
Well your all sick. you would rather banter back and forth like this is some t.v. show. I suggest you go on with your own lives, leave this family in peace and allow the police to do their jobs. And if you think posting on WSAZ website is gonna make a difference or make the police do more than they are your delusional and egocentric. May god be with Leah and her family and for the rest of you stop fueling this fire and go about your lives. Once again WSAZ shut this Blog down its completely disgusting that your allowing people to comment on such a tragedy.

Posted by: Elvis on Apr 11, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Hey kathy s and all of you other wanna be slueths, hpd has the results of dna testing and have had them for sometime... but as previosly stated they are not going to share these results publicly. Kathy S sorry if your feelings got tweaked... take a deep breath and eat another moon pie it's gonna be ok. I never claimed to be an expert on dna, but i do know how the system works.

Looks as though this case is going cold. I certainly hope that it does not. I believe that there should be a prayer vigil for the Leah Hickman’s case held at Marshall. The power of prayer to the Lord Jesus can make all the difference in the world. Prayer and faith in Jesus to expose the killer or killers to make their mistake and expose themselves to the police. We cannot always blame the police, they are trying their best to uphold the law, the criminals make the police investigators' jobs harder by committing so many crimes. Also, for the judicial system to put the criminals away and have stiffer penalties. Let's continue as a community to be aware of this case and the many others out there that is having the same difficulty in solving the case. Everyone should be aware, and if there are people that know who might have done this crime, do not be afraid to come forward with your information. Come together Marshall.

Posted by: student on Apr 9, 2008 at 11:09 PM
To Vicky...I agree with you! I am a Marshall student and I don't feel safe in Huntington either! It is a shame, too. I love Marshall but there is a lot of stuff that happens on campus, let-alone off campus. To Leah Hickman family....we are all still thinking and praying for you!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 9, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Leah, i miss you so much... we'll find who did this to you! and just remember i'll see you again someday...

Posted by: Freedom on Apr 8, 2008 at 09:31 AM
I think WSAZ has the right idea here. For people interested in this case this is our only hotline. I do not believe that anyone here is trying to hurt the famliy we are simlpy following the case. Yes, it is common knowledge that Leah's case is draggin along but with voices out here it lets the police know that people are concerned and watch detail. There is danger in case no one realizes it the killer knew Leah and a killer could be setting beside an innocent student in class or riding around the area hangin out with local students/people. I say stop the nasty comments and stick with concerns about the case. As for the DNA testing, why would anyone not wonder WHY? It is taking so long? No need to hire a private investigator now because this person has had enough time to compose themself to a normal routine. Cops can only go with the evidence they have secured. Lets all just hope there is enough to convict.I still believe someone other than the killer knows who done this.

Posted by: Kate on Apr 8, 2008 at 08:41 AM
People need to STOP bashing the HPD. I hate the fact that Leah's murder(s)aren't in Jail or dead right now but we have to STOP blaming it on other people. The only people responsible are the people who put an end to Leah's life!! Its time we think about the IMPORTANT things in this case. Justice for Leah and keep the Hickman Family in our prayers. Could you imagine being Leahs family and reading some of these comments?!!! COME ON PEOPLE! Instead of arguing with other stupid comments on this website, encourage the HPD that we have thier backs and we trust that they are doing everything they can to bring Leahs murder(S) to JUSTICE!! I have my opinions on this murder investigation but I will keep them to myself, out of RESPECT to Leah and her memory!

well, I had a comment on this story, nothing out of place, nothing slanderous, nothing vulgar or even hurtful, but WSAZ did it again, left it out. thanks

Posted by: Kathy S on Apr 7, 2008 at 04:04 PM
More for "Elvis". IF you would have read my previous posts, you would KNOW that I was simply asking the question about WHY it is taking so long. I wanted someone who is truly knowledgeable about DNA & law enforcement to respond because I wasn't being sarcastic OR "whining". I was sincere about asking why this is taking so long that's all. Obviously you aren't the expert you claim to be or you would have simply explained why sometimes it takes longer in certain cases because that's all I honestly was asking. Besides there "Elvis", didn't you die back in 1977? Nice of you to come back just to tell me I'm "boring" you! Time you left the building until you learn to read peoples' posts more closely before you attack them there Elvi!

Posted by: Kathy S on Apr 7, 2008 at 04:00 PM
Hey Elvis! 03/19/08 04:07 PM First of all, I wasn't "whining" about the DNA. I was simply asking someone to explain to me why it was taking so long, but sorry I've bored you by simply asking about something I truly don't understand. Instead of explaining anything useful to me & others you had to get nasty. So, thank you 4 all the useful knowledge about it that you've contributed to this discussion. IF they get it back you would assume then they would arrest someone if they indeed have "suspects" as rumored so I don't need them to "tell" me or anyone else, just ARREST someone!

Posted by: Abri on Apr 7, 2008 at 09:27 AM
AMEN GUMP!!! Its amazing that these people think real life investigations progress as smoothly as a T.V. series. I think its ridiculous that this type of story even has a comment blog. Come on WSAZ all this is doing is fueling arguments and hateful comments, I suggest you keep updating everyone on the story, but shut this blog down. It is disrespectful to the family and Leah to allow such banter, shame on you all. This was someones friend, sister, daughter, and you all are posting on here like a bunch of drooling animals waiting to be fed more.

Posted by: Gump on Apr 5, 2008 at 09:32 PM
You people are a joke. this isn't CSI Miami. Stay out of it and let the police do their job.

If the PD let more info out on this case, maybe someone out here will recognize a trait in someone that they may know, and be able to give good info as to who the beast is that commited this crime. May Leah Rest In Peace and may God Comfort Her Family.

Posted by: D on Apr 3, 2008 at 11:01 AM
The only person you have the right to be angry with is the murderer. The family knows the detectives are trying to solve this case. It is easy to sit back and criticize but please keep the mean comments to yourself. This family is hurting and need love and support. Stop the complaining and bickering. Don't do this to the family or to Leah's memory. They deserve so much better than this. Give the detectives your support. They really care about this family and are trying so hard! Please be kind. Treat others the way you want to be treated and that will be the best way to honor Leah's memory and a comfort to her family. PLEASE!!!!!

I didnt even know this girl, and it breaks my heart. I dont care if you really do hate someone how could you ever do that to someone? I just dont understand & I think these "investigators" so you call them, need to get out of their rolly recling chairs , spit that doughnut out and get to steppin coz' somthin needs done and done quick --- who ever done this is just running free and it is not right, not at all. You would think we have all these hi*tech officers/FBI and what not and we cant catch one man? hmmm thats bad. Her family has suffered enough get out there and get degrading loser!

In my opinion Huntington P.D could not track down an Elephant in two feet of snow. Much less catch a killer without someone confessing, or being turned in.Hey Huntington Mayor Fellington hire yourself someone with some investigative skills. Maybe then Andy and Barney can go back to writing Parking Tickets at the Donut Shop.

Posted by: Ohiomom on Mar 31, 2008 at 05:08 PM
I hope they catch who did this soon.. i have hope that they already know who did it there just waiting on the right time to make a move.. God Bless

Well maybe Huntington P.D will get lucky. Even a Blind Squirrel finds a nut once in awhile. Hire your self someone with some investigative skills.

William, Your comment about Robin's english was uncalled for. William who made you the police for correct english. You need to study up on your manners.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 28, 2008 at 11:37 AM
As someone who is close with the Hickman family most of you don't know what you are talking about. The HPD has been very good with the family on keeping them informed on everything that they can. They make sure they tell the family anything that is going to be released and the HPD has stayed in close contact with the family. You want this person caught but most of you are more interested in the information than making sure the case is handled properly. Imagine if it was one of your loved ones and the investigation was hurt because the police released to much information. Don't you think that there is a chance that if they release to much informationt the person who did this might get spooked and run. So if you don't have all the information on the case and how its being handled don't complain be grateful that the HPD is working so hard to bring this killer to justice. Thank you Hunington Police Department and keep up the good work.

Posted by: Sandy on Mar 27, 2008 at 05:33 PM
Someone asked what would be different about this DNA that it would need more exensive testing. If two people have similar DNA it may need more detailed examination. I think this is what had happened with the Madeline McCann investigation. There was issues about Madeline's DNA being found in the rental car rented after her abduction. Parents insisted that it was other family member's body fluids not Madeline's. Not sure if this is the case here. I am passing no judgement. Just giving info.

Posted by: unknown on Mar 27, 2008 at 12:25 PM
i think they know who did it. But there waiting on the right move to move in on the killer(s).

Posted by: Me on Mar 27, 2008 at 08:26 AM
I Think that the Police should not release any information untill they find out who did this to her. To much information is let out to the public and that hurts the family and the case.

Posted by: R on Mar 27, 2008 at 07:00 AM
Vicky's comment is a good one. Why is it that such a amall town is so drug infested? I think there should more Drug inforcement people in this College town. Makes one wonder if the Killer/killers really knew Leah? Perhaps if people in Athority would focus more on industry & Jobs in WV crime would subside enough to make it safe for people to live. The English language is the proper language for America not matter how it is presented! I hope Leah's death is Justified soon. The length of the investigation is making it difficult to beleive Justice will come.

Posted by: William on Mar 26, 2008 at 12:52 PM
To ROBIN - I think you meant to say who DID this. I get tired of hearing opinions from people who cannot even use proper English. It is no wonder that people from other countries want to speak their native language here. A lot of bumpkins cannot even speak English, so why should they.

Actually, WVU is a quite larger school than Marshall, and there is far less crime at WVU. I don't know where you get that Huntington is safe. I won't even go on campus past dark. I have to have someone take me. I can't wait to get out of here. College is supposed to be the best days of your life well I'll let you know instances have happened to me numerous times off campus. If I go visit my mom near DC I don't run to my car, here at Marshall I run to my car in fear of another thing happening. Huntington is NOT safe.

IN REGARDS TO THE LEAH HICKMAN CASE I THINK THE POLICE HAVE RELEASED ENOUGH INFORMATION THE ONLY THING MISSING IS A DESCRIPTION OF WHO DONE THIS HORRIFIC ACT.HONESTLY, AS SAD AS IT IS I BELEIVE LIKE ALL THE OTHER MURDERS IN OUR AREA THEY WILL NEVER KNOW WHO DONE THIS.

To Vicki: I went to college in several large cities and "bigger schools". One was even located in Boston. Your comment upsets me greatly! The crime stories here are not less than there. I felt safe walking through the streets of Boston at night but will not in Hunt.! I see that you feel Hunt. is very safe compared to larger cities. You are wrong! Search the internet for city's crime rates per population. You will find that Hunt. has a VERY high crime rate per capita. This "small" town is not safe. The low income and employment rates have resulted in more people turning to drugs to earn money. We do not have effective education programs nor rehab facilities to help the ones in need. You are not well informed when you say this is a great place to live compared to other cities. I am afraid to drive thru Hunt. without my doors locked in the daylight hours. We have an epidemic of drug use and sales here. Everyday when I turn on the news someone new has been murdered. Do you live in a bubble?

Just so that who ever did this knows, there WILL be JUSTICE for Leah!!

Posted by: Vicky on Mar 23, 2008 at 12:51 AM
Is Huntington the only place you have ever lived. I wont drive thru there after dark. You can drive up thru certain sections in the middle of the day and see drug deals. I know this happens in all large cities but I would not say they are a good place to live.

I like seeing that everyone -- including the general public-- are still very interested in the case. I feel for the family, and have prayed for them from the beginning, such a tragedy losing someone so young so soon. I know being a mother that would have to be the hardest thing to do. I hope that if ANYONE OUT THERE knows ANYTHING to go talk to the police maybe it would help them go the right direction and put this family at ease and solve the case -- Also I think that the police dep. is doing the right thing in keeping much of the case sealed because there are only a select few that should know the details and thats including the person(s) who did this horrendous crime. OUR HEARTS, THOUGHTS, AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE FAMILY HERE IN CROWN CITY!

Posted by: Chad on Mar 20, 2008 at 03:07 PM
I think its sad that so many people are so eager to hear details of a horrific act like this. The police are doing their jobs (whether you think its a good job or not). It just boils down to your all nosey and want to hear a juicy story. To me that is quite sad. As for the individual who stated the cops just sit around waiting to give speeding tickets, there is a difference between police officers and detectives they all do different jobs in law enforcement. Your thoughts would be better served praying for the family rather than polluting this post with your self centered need for details of this crime. To the family I am sorry for your loss.

i have lived in hgtn all my life and it used to be where we would not even lock our doors!!!! i think hgtn is a great place to live. There is crime eveywhere not just hgtn!!!!! i'm sorry the marshall students are scared but if you went to a bigger college just think of what that would have been like!!!I also think the fbi and hgtn police could release amore detaisl and atleast go after the person they think responsible. however in the same turn i feel if they had anymore to go on they would have. heads up to hgtn police dept!!!!also, just wanted to say I'm sorry and my heart and prayers are wiith leah's family!!!! hey hungtiongton it is also up to the people who live here to help keep the place clean and take the trash out if u know what i mean!!!!!so get busy and do something about it instead of whining!!!!!!!!!!!! TOO LEAH'S FAMILY WHOMEVER DONE THIS NEEDS TO PAY BADLY!!!LET'S HOPE THEY CATCH WHOMEVER IT WAS FOR LEAH!!!! MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU AND YOURS!!!!!!

Hey Kathy S 3-17-08 2:02 pm. The Police do have results back for testing already performed by WVSP but they are not going to release the results to the public. Additional items have been submitted to the FBI lab for more extensive testing than WVSP can do. These results won't be released either... so please stop boring us all with your whining about DNA reults they are not gonna tell ya.

The information released by the HPD was not much but It was an update. I trust they are close and the MURDERER/S will come forth. If it is someone she knows remember they are not professional killers and the pressure may break their silence. I bet the pressure is taking its toll on them.I bet they have confided in someone and others know the truth. If the passenger door of the car was really ajar did someone check the camera @ McDonalds. Why did the police dogs not find the body? Were they giving the wrong scent? Did one person stuff her in the hole? There is no way this person/s covered all their tracks. The police knows who did it they just need to gather the evidence and that is what they are doing.I do not feel that anyone on this site is not concerned with Leah & her parents and I think this sight is good to let people know that the public is still concerned about this young lady's death. Good luck HPD I hope the big break is here soon..

The only person that can change her login date is Leah.. Unless someone else has her password.. I thought her MySpace mood for the day was interesting.. read her friends and their friends messages..I can assure you it will take time..but, the police will get this solved in time.. they know what they are doing..

I really think that the Huntington Police Department needs an overhaul. It took them a week to find her body in the building where she lived, and the only reason they have been "tight-lipped" is because it seems to me that they aren't actually doing anything on the case at all. I don't know how many times I've seen cops sitting in cemeteries or just on the side of the road waiting to pull someone over for speeding. Thank goodness they're doing the city good! Nobody seems to care that Huntington's rate of decay is increasing exponentially. With the exception of a few blocks around Pullman Square and a few select other places, Huntington isn't safe at all. I don't even feel safe driving through Huntington in my locked car. I really wish Huntington police would get their act together and get the city back under their control and safe once again.

My heart felt sympathy & prayers go out to the Hickman family. I pray that they find the killer/killers as soon as possible. She was such a beautiful young lady.

No one here has given any explanation or answer to my previous post where I ask...WHY is her DNA info so different or "special" it's taken over 3 MONTHS to get the results as the HPD claims? Why do other victims' DNA results come back so quickly & Leah's is taking so long? That's all I would like someone to explain to me because I truly don't understand that. I'm not blaming anyone here, just trying to understand why hers IS taking so long so if anyone can explain that to me please do. That's all I'm asking here. AND why is NO ONE even talking about that woman who went missing at Foodfair a few wks ago? I just want to know THAT & whether it was hoax; just a domestic spat & she came back or what. WHY is NO ONE talking or mentioning what happened about HER & THAT case? AND as someone else said, the HPD has NEVER solved the murders of the 4 kids years ago. Let's not forget them either. They and Leah deserve justice. I hope they all get it soon.

In response to Cody- Talk with your friends and see if they are willing to go to the police. If they haven't had the time or opportunity to seek you out try going to them. Hopefully they will at least take some statements. I'm no Sherlock Holmes but I think family and friends would be the best source of information about Leah's life and connections at the time of this tragedy. If it were one of my best friends I'd have a bullhorn out front of city hall- Remain a friend and don't let this case fade away

WE DO NOT have enough police in the city or in the state. everyone keeps talking about how things are not done right but they do not look at the over worked police. I really doubt they get into it for the bad health care, dental, and money. they get into it to help people. But if you only have one police officer for every 3,000 people it kind of weighs on them. they are doing the best they can do and they know what they are doing. trust me i doubt this is HPD's first murder. If this was your daughter would you want the public to know more details? i doubt more details like how she was killed would cause more callers to give info. They are doing what they can to help this out. Try giving someone a break rather then kicking them.

I would hope to think we would all want justice for our children. And as long as Leah's parent's are satisfied with this investigation we should be also. Because again is this about US? Can you not remember already about a BEATIFUL TALENTED LIFE THAT SHOULD BE REMEMBERED 1ST, !!LEAH HICKMAN!! It is so sad that everyone at this point wants to add their personal problems in on this. I say this loud enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE LET THIS BE ABOUT LEAH! LET ME REACH OUT TO YOU, LET IT BE ABOUT: 1st LEAH 2ND HER PARENTS And on and on. Her Mother who gave birth to this beautiful child. I'm know she and Leah's father want answers more than we would or could ever know, unless you yourself have lost a child in this way, Or you've walked in Leah's parent's shoes. (As they say) So before you pass judgment, unless you know Leah's parent's view's stay focused on the fact that, they do want answers MORE THAN ANY OF US COULD EVER WANT.

I would like to correct my posting on March 15th 2008 @ 10:14am I stated (in a part of my posting) although I have to remind you of the sad number that helped pray along with her mother, held tightly by one of Leah's best fiend's. The correction is that Leah's Mother was held tightly by the MOTHER of one of Leah's best friends. I would again like to state this is about Leah & her family. If her Mother is not happy with the way this investigation is going then let everyone start complaining, about burglary's or this that and the other. Although her death(LEAH HICKMAN) REMEMBER!!!!!!! HER NAME!! PLEASE DON'T FORGET WHY WE ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT THIS RIGHT NOW!! As a parent of a Graduate of Marshall University and a parent of a student at Marshall University. That if the it was my child and the police gave my and only me the information I would have to get justice for my child first. Please Remember(GOD KNOWS!! I WOULD NOT WANT ANYONE ELSE TO SUFFER THE PAIN SHE MUST BE FEELING)

I was one of Leah's best friends I miss her so much and dont understand any of this! Me and my other close friend are wondering why wee haven't ben qustioned by the police we have racked are brains and can't figure out who it could of been but we did know people she was talking to at the time and other information which might be worth nothing but it could be worth something

Posted by: D on Mar 16, 2008 at 01:06 PM
Good for hpd for not leting much info out while still working on the case. it is only her families concern with the deatails, not the general nosy public. All we need to know is that they are working hard on the case. It is not like they DON'T want it solved. They have to answer to that family. Keep up good work HPD

Posted by: ky on Mar 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Tim you said she was stabbed. I thought she was strangled?? I just wasn't sure if there was something I hadn't heard or what.

Posted by: anon on Mar 16, 2008 at 11:53 AM
I agree with Steve. Even if they solve this case (which I hope & pray they do for the family) but there is still going to be crime out there. So people shouldn't be scared only b/c of this crime.

Posted by: D on Mar 16, 2008 at 11:38 AM
How do we know the HPD is not working "a little harder" to find the killer??? WE do not know that. I have faith in our police department.

Posted by: watcher on Mar 16, 2008 at 08:19 AM
Its no accident the police were so long releasing the info.Thats good police work. you dont tell what you know to the world. my bet is that if it was left to the detectives there would have been no release. the chief has to respond to the mayor who responds to unlearned public who demands info irrespective of the damage it could cause to the case and tv and paper reporters just want a story to feather their cap.

I don't see the connection that picking up trash and mowing your lawn will keep crime out of our city. I use to live across the street from a beautiful well kept half million dollar home. Their lawn was done every Saturday by a lawn/landscaping company. I came home one day from work and every city police car was surrounding the home. They were running a meth lab inside the home. A clean city doesn't make a safe city.

The Huntington Police force is HORRIBLE... from experience they are liars and do not fullfil the needs of Huntington Tax Payers. I have had 2 calls of BURGLERY in action the police got there... did nothing... and told me and a friend they would drive the area for the next half hour and look for the person. Well me and a friend drove around and the cops left 2 minutes after they drove from my house. The cops here DO NOT care about ne one but themselves and have had MANY horrible incidents here.

Posted by: S. on Mar 16, 2008 at 12:51 AM
Tim needs to re-read this and see that Leah was strangled, not stabbed.

Posted by: Tim on Mar 15, 2008 at 10:38 PM
The HPD is taking the heat because when something traggic happens, its makes people feel better if there is someone to put the blame on. So what they took 3 months to release she was stabbed....does it make a difference how she was killed? Does knowing 3 months ago or 3 months later matter either? Also for the comment about them logging into her myspace page.....First they have to obtain the password....which means they have to serve papers to Myspace to obtain the password, ect ect ect.....its not as simple as you think it is.

Posted by: donna on Mar 15, 2008 at 08:43 PM
I think that its a shame that its taken the Huntington Police Dept. so long to release any information. They need to work a little harder to solve this and bring the killer to justice so the family can have closure. I didnt know Leah but I seen her pictures on the news and she was a beautiful girl and it sounds as though she had a very bright future. Hopefully this will end soon. My prayers go out to the family and friends.

Hey, Steve...guess what. In the girls self-defense class, the officer told them not to be scared but they really should learn self-defense because he said a lot more goes on in and around campus than his department has to report. And what I was saying was, if people picked up their garbage and had some more pride in their community, you'd be amazed at how things would turn around. There is no quick-fix solution to the crime in Huntington, but we all know that it isn't getting any better. And Steve, Marshall students are afraid to walk off campus because when you have people being mugged at 6:00pm at Subway and other places nearby, then yeah...students have a right to be concerned. I'm sorry if you feel like I am an out-of-towner telling you what to do, but I want this city cleaned up as much as everyone else does. I don't particularly enjoy hearing about fellow students getting mugged. You can build new stores all you want, but until the crime is cleaned up...nothing will change.

Posted by: jordan on Mar 15, 2008 at 04:50 PM
why in the world would somebody kill a beautiful girl like that

Posted by: watcher on Mar 15, 2008 at 12:21 PM
With the cause of death and lack of periphary violation, the assailant is easy to figure, assuming there is no other substantial evidence undisclosed. The lack of violation would indicate there is the assailant and probably a second participant.Shame. This may not be solved, and will not be dissimilar to the Burns case, except the multistate angle. Chief, don;t disclose too much info, you can't investigate or solve this case in the media. Interviews are in order. Restart your people oriented investigation. The scene is in stasis, people will change. Watch for the opportunity, there is a loose end.

I heard from a local police officer she wasnt strangled..and it's a huge cover-up

Posted by: STEVE on Mar 15, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Yes, what happened to Leah was horrible. But to the MU student asking everyone to get out and pick up trash, what does that have to do with the crime in Huntington. All the lawns on my street are well taken care of, but that isn't going to stop someone from breaking into my home (wish it would). And I am not trying to upset you, but why are so many MU students saying that they are scared for their lives ? These crimes are happening in every part of Huntington. Correct me if I am wrong, but how many murders have happened on the MU campus or even within a block or two where most students live. With campus security always out and about, it is probably the safest area to live in.

We should all be happy with the way things are being brought forth, if Leah's Family is. We don't all know what they think but I'm sure they want answers as soon as possible, although I would think they would want the right answers. And let me say again everyone seems to want to lay blame, on someone else and talk about their fears, although I will have to remind you of the sad number that help pray along with her mother, held tightly by one of Leah's best friend's at the service at Marshal, before they had even found Leah, and her service did you notice they young girls in they back ground with such broken heart's that they had lost such a dear friend? So be for you start talking now and laying blame, think back, take action to help Leah and Her Family, Say A Prayer. Stand Strong After all THEY HAVE ENDURED THE TRUE FEELING OF BEING SCARED, SAD, AND WANTING ANSWERS MORE THAN ANY OF US COULD EVER NOW OR NEED!!!!!!!!

I wonder how some people in the area knew Leah had been strangled ....before it was released to the public or family...makes on wonder....

To A LIFETIME RESIDENT OF HUNTINGTON...for being a small town, Huntington sure has a sky-high crime rate. It was reported on WSAZ.com not too long ago that in fact, Huntington had 3% more crime than Charleston...a city bigger than us. Until the attitude of people change, nothing ever will. Maybe you should ask some of your fellow citizens to clean up all the trash in their own yards and ask people to pick up the garbage along all the roads. I do my part and throw away my garbage...why can't others do the same? Even though Leah's terrible tragedy was not random, most of all the muggings and robberies are. This isn't my hometown. I can't make a big difference here...only the citizens can. So please, don't ask me what I can do for you, tell me what you can do for your city...besides making the same excuses that I hear all the time. You better start to worry about how crime will affect Marshall. PS, I hope the recent EPA labeling of "unbreathable" air here isn't the cause of your sneezing.

I AM GETTING SO FRUSTRATED. Why has nobody yet to mention why Leah Hickmans Myspace still shows the last login date of 12/14/07. Which means that the Huntington Police Department have NEVER logged into her Myspace page. ??? That's crazy. That could be a huge piece of information. What is the hold up? Its been months!!! When you log into your myspace page, it shows your last login date. Meaning... nobody has logged into her page since her death. Why won't WSAZ ask the Huntington Police this question? Social Networking sites could prove to be very valuable in cases like this. They can find out who she was talking to leading up to and perhaps she mentioned things that day. Such as... where she was going, who she was meeting, etc. You never know. Please someone start investigating this.

Posted by: L on Mar 15, 2008 at 12:44 AM
Maybe we should think back when Leah went missing, how many went to the marshal service and help hold her family up said prayers with them new Leah, her talent of kind nature, do you have a CD in your house with her picture on it when she played in the bell choir? Do you know anything about her family and what they want out of this and what they think of what about the progress and finding the truth? Yes we all have options, but why don't you say a pray for them before you start putting down everyone else or maybe t
