A trial date is now set for two Charleston Police Officers accused of spotlighting a deer in Putnam County.

Patrolman Conrad Carpenter and Corporal James White Junior will go on trial June 10.

DNR officials say the two shined a light on a deer before shooting it.

The officers claim the deer was injured, and they were just putting it down.

Police Chief Brent Webster says White and Carpenter are on paid administrative leave.

So, let me get this straight. Does it make it a criminal act by shining a light on it? That seems rather silly if true. And if it was observed as just laying on the side of the road nearly dead, how is putting it down "hunting"...I suppose if they took it home then one can vaguely argue that, but why not? Let it go to waste? I wouldn't. And "conspiracy"? Just seems blown way out of proportion because they are law enforcement...plenty of people do the same thing every day and you never hear a word about it....something to think about.

THIS IS CRAZY..... LIKE WE HAVE NOTHING ELSE GOING ON. THERE ARE PEOPLE SHOOTING PEOPLE AND PARENTS NOT TAKING CARE OF THEIR KIDS AND YET THIS IS A BIG DEAL. I DON'T GET IT. PEOPLE DO THIS EVERYDAY AND DON'T MAKE THE NEWS BUT BECAUSE IT IS LAW ENFORCEMENT, LETS MAKE A BIG DEAL OVER IT. DO ANYONE REMEMBER THE PHRASE NO ONE IS PERFECT.

So it's OK to shoot deer but you can't shine a light on it? Maybe I haven't had enough coffee this morning but this doesn't make sense. Speaking of deer, if any of you folks drive Rt 2 regularly, be careful. I've been seeing at least 2 new kills a day there, just in the 5 mile stretch between Huntington and where I turn off.

I think that there is a long running war between the police and dnr , it seemes to be that way everywhere I hunt.

This isn't new news. The police have been doing this for years. Check Wayne county.
