HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- More than learning about the candidates for mayor, some local students got to grill them.
They may seem easygoing, but these young people threw out some hard questions for Huntington’s mayoral candidates. The result is some new constituents eager to cast their vote.
“I got good perspective that I may not have gotten,” senior Andy Agee said.
“Now that I know where they stand, I’m definitely encouraged,” senior Laura Benson said.
“They’re going to be living here longer than anyone and we want them to stay and the more interest they have, the more likely they are to stay,” Huntington Mayor David Felinton said.
The interest is buzzing. A small question and answer session continued even after the main event.
“When have assembly, they have to be there, but I had better questions in this small setting afterwards,” mayoral candidate Shawn Bresnahan (D) said.
Shawn Bresnahan is the new kid on the block. The local businessman only moved to Huntington two years ago, but he's emerging as the crowd favorite among these young people.
“We need a business person and when I saw who was running, I thought we'll either have four more years of the same or I can change things,” Bresnahan said.
Bresnahan will have a tough fight against two-time incumbent mayor, David Felinton, long-time public official and current Cabell County Commissioner, Bob Bailey, and lifelong Huntington area resident and two-time sheriff, Kim Wolfe.
“I had opportunities to go other places, but stayed here, roots here,” mayoral candidate Kim Wolfe (R) said.
The fireworks flew further engaging these young students.
“I think some are interested-- some don't know much. Would like to see them take more interest,” Andy said.
Democrats Mayor David Felinton, Shawn Bresnahan and Bob Bailey and republican Sheriff Kim Wolfe attended Wednesday’s event.
