FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear says a proposal to legalize casinos in Kentucky will not pass in the current legislative session.

Beshear said the measure simply doesn't have enough support among lawmakers. He pronounced the measure dead in an impromptu press conference outside his Capitol office on Thursday evening.

The governor had pushed for a constitutional amendment to legalize casinos. He said allowing casinos to open could have generated up to $600 million a year in much needed state revenue.

Lawmakers would have had to agree to change the state's constitution to allow casinos. Voters then would have had a chance to ratify or reject the proposal in a ballot referendum.

The casino legislation is House Bill 550.

THANK GOD THIS WAS NOT PASSED....WE HAVE ENOUGH PROBLEMS IN KY......THIS WOULD HAVE ONLY ADDED TO THE ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND CRIME IN OUR AREA....WE DON'T HAVE TO CASINOS TO GENERATE JOBS....THERE IS OTHER BUSINESS'S THAT COULD BE STARTED TO HELP PUT PEOPLE TO WORK.....THEY NEED TO FOCUS ON BRINGING IN GOOD BUSINESS AND NOT JUST THINK ABOUT THE LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY THAT GAMBLING WOULD BRING IN BUT THINK ABOUT WHAT WOULD HELP THE COMMUNITY IN A GOOD WAY....A BUSINESS THAT WON'T DESTROY LIVES AND INCREASE CRIME....

It's sad to think that our elected officials can't bring jobs to our area. My husband and I would love to have been able to get a job in a casino. Thanks Kentucky!

Anonymous; can you personally guarantee these jobs and the revenue from gambling. Can you also guarantee that there won't be broken families, unpaid bills, and an increase in crime?

If you want to see the effects of legalized gambling parlors I suggest you travel east on US60 between St. Albans and Charleston WV. All you see are the gambling parlors, run down motels, drug addicts and prostitutes. Yeah, we really want that garbage in KY. No thank you.

Mr. Beshear's proposed regressive tax on the poor and middle class is dead. What forward thinking men and women we have in public office today. I have heard through reliable sources that Mr. Beshear and his geezer appointeees have proposed doing away with computers and transitoning to a fleet of carrier pigeons. An investment in a politician is an inherent disspointment. Taxpaying citisens have paid their fair share for decades only to see self absorbed, nebish politicians squander it adn leave us in this dire financial predicament. Guess they'll tax us more so they can squander that too. Progressive minds at work.... Pathetic

way to go kentucky. nevermind the potential for jobs and tax revenue. just stay true to your beliefs that a casino is the devil.

Take a look at this story from WSAZ...http://www.wsaz.com/news/headlines/16983051.html just paste it in your browser and read about the robbery of this gambling joint. I left a comment there also. All gambling does is bring in undesirables to the area. We already have problems with drug dealers, drug addicts, robberies etc. Why do you think copper wiring, air conditioning parts are being stolen? To support their habit!! So when these gambling addicts run out of money what are they going to resort to? You got it! Robbing to support their habit! If Kentucky wants to get out of the "backwoods", then why don't Gov. Beshear bring in some GOOD paying jobs to our area instead of casinos that WILL destroy families and communities! But there are people out there that wouldn't work no matter what! Oh yea, if a good paying company would come to our area, Gov. Beashear would want to tax them to the point where they wouldn't stay around for long. "Backwoods" what a joke. Democrats and taxes...ugh!

Samm, stay in the backwoods if you want; that is your choice but don't judge the rest of us as being that way. A big THANK YOU! to our leaders in Frankfort for listening to us.

Too bad WV's lawmakers weren't as willing to stand up to their governor as KY's were. KY might stay in the backwoods and behind times, but if it means families stay together longer and out of debt longer, then hallelujiah! WV can have the casinos, the Detroit drug dealers, and the broken homes that all come with it. Just keep it on your side of the river.

Ky.can't allow it's people to vote on it cause it would pass big time and all those sinners would just ruin the state.Land of the free-if you do as your told!

I am very happy to hear that! Gambling does destroy families. And you are right it is like a drug addiction and we don't need to add to addictions around here! It would have only caused problems. I am just happy it did not pass!

Posted by: samm on Mar 28, 2008 at 07:48 AM
I guess Ky will stay in the backwoods and behind the times even longer now.
