The Charleston Gazette, West Virginia's largest newspaper, endorsed Democratic candidate Barack Obama for president Tuesday.
Gazette editors called Obama a "rare figure in U.S. politics -- a deep thinker who rises above partisan sniping and makes statecraft seem noble."
The Gazette editorial points out that Obama and Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton are almost identical on the issues, but Obama's early opposition to the Iraq war put him over the top.
West Virginians vote May 13th. A Rasmussen poll in late March showed Clinton with 55% support to 27% for Obama among likely West Virginia voters.
